Training about to BEGIN

I am blessed with several local running partners. On most days I can probably find someone to meet me and hit the pavement. Lately the majority of my miles have been spent with Muscle Man, him pushing the Little Studs. For a couple years he has been saying he will run his first Half Marathon, injuries, timing, etc.. have gotten in the way. I think this Summer when I helped Tall Sister run her first Half HERE, he knew that it was his turn in 2012. But which race??

My first Half Marathon I ran the Capital City Half in Olympia, WA, report HERE. Muscle Man was there to support me, take photos and run along for parts. The race is small and the scenery is pretty. Muscle Man likes smaller races so he has chosen Capital City Half on May 20th as his first... Although I made some mistakes my first time out, I ran hard and still have not been able to match my finish time. I plan to run every step with Muscle Man and to help him with his training. There are HILLS but it has to be easier than pushing 120++ pounds of kiddos.. They may not give medals but the PRIDE felt once you cross the Finish Line is unmatched.
I am excited for this journey with my husband. Will be recruiting babysitters and paparazzi to come take pictures soon.. It will be fun to create the AMBITIOUS sub 2:00 hour training plan for my favorite client. This weekend we ran on Saturday and Sunday on the Foothills trail with the Little Studs under the rain cover, it was chilly. We kept the pace pretty easy and enjoyed conversation. There were some fun things.

1. We saw a HUGE Bald Eagle on a tree branch close to the trail.

2. There was a lady walking carrying The STICK.. we were not sure if she was carrying it for protection or to roll out her legs mid way through her walk :)

3. One guy asked "Do you ever trade?" referring to the jogging stroller, I replied "Only when no one is around." Which is TRUE.

4. We parked in a new location in the middle of the 7 mile trail, so we got to see the PRETTY parts of the trail without having to run 3++ miles to get there, it was a weird feeling.

5. As usual Muscle Man was sweaty and I wasn't ;)

  • Have you ever run a race with your significant other? How did it go?

  • What race are you EXCITED for in 2012??

My husband and I run the Thanksgiving race in my hometown every year. It's the only race he'll do because it's SO much fun. 15,000 people crammed into a two lane road with friends, family and neighbors along the way. I love this race and I'm so glad he hopped on the bandwagon to do it with me! I'm excited for a couple of half marathons this year. I'm thinking my times have gotten better and I want to see what these short legs can do!

Am I first?

In college, I tried to run with Jamey at the track to help him get ready for his police officer physical fitness test. He accused me of going to fast and that's the last time we've run together.

Shoot! Guess I was 2nd!

oh how fun! that's awesome you will be training him and running his first half with him. i've done a few 5k's with the edder, but that's as far as he cares to ever run :)

I'm pretty new to running and my longest distance so far was a 10K, although I'm training for a half marathon now. When I started running, my husband got interested first and then my daughter (14) got interested after watching me do a 5K Run Like Hell for Halloween. The three of us have done two races together now - a 2 mile Winter Wonderland and a 5K New Year's Day run.

My husband, who is an avid cyclist, is much faster than I, even though he rarely runs. Our daughter, who does circus (sort of like gymnastics) goes nearly my pace without training at all. It's fun to do runs together, but it's also humbling.

Yay! Good luck to MM on his training. No doubt it will go great with you by his side.

We ran our very first race (a half marathon) together, and have gone on to run many more side by side. Love it!

I ran my first half with my husband. He ran the first two miles with me then I told him to take off. I finished just over 3 hours, and he finished 2:09:28. I think if he would have just ran his race he would have ran sub-2 his first time out. However he hasn't ran since, he tore is meniscus that race (hilly kirkland and wet roads makes for slippery hills when you are running fast).

That is so sooo awesome your husband is going to run a half! I have been begging my husband but no luck. I hope e loves it and has a great experience! The people who walk in my neighborhood ALL carry weapons, some sticks, one a baseball bat, one a hockey stick. I feel like they all know something I don't.....

I'm excited & soooooo nervous for the Vancouver USA Marathon in June. It will be my first full marathon. Yikes. What have I gotten myself into? I'm beyond determined to cross the finish line no matter what. :)

My hubs is really athletic (tennis) but hates the thought of running... yet he's big on hiking/mountain climbing... so I'm trying to convince him that he might enjoy some trail running. Trying hard... totally think he'd get into it. I haven't quite convinced him yet, but I think I'm getting there. ;-)

So happy Muscle Man is gonna take on this race, I'm sure he'll rock it out!!!

Hubby thinks running is a form of punishment, but when I run on the treadmill at the gym I take the machine behind his elliptical. I never catch him. *shrug*

my bf signed up for his first 1/2 marathon (RNR New Orleans) in december. i have been with him on most of his training runs but he says he doesn’t want to hold me up on race day-but i would love it!! he’s already signed up for 2 more races and hasn’t completed his first yet. i think he caught the bug :)

Good luck Muscle Man!

The BF insists he is not a runner, but we hike/snowshoe together almost every weekend. I love our Sunday strolls!

Sub-2 is totally possible! It's awesome that the two of you get to reach that goal together. :)

I haven't ever run a race with Colin because our times are so disparate. He usually leaves me in the dust... At least this summer we will "race" together once. At least as much as you can at a race through vineyards where the stops are for wine and appies! No point going for a PR on that one - and it's only 17-19km anyways...

Looking forward to all my races! Finally think I might get that marathon PR in May and can't wait to see so many people in Seattle at RnR in June! Might just get a half PR then too!

How fun! Good luck MM! May 20th is the day after mine and S' 5th anniversary. How to celebrate? Run RNR Portland (but probably not together, together...)

That's so great that you two are going to run a half together! I've never had the opportunity to race with my s.o., but maybe one day it will happen. Best of luck!

As for exciting races, I just the Mercer Island half on my plate. I was also contemplating running a May marathon, but I'm on the fence about a couple of them. We'll see! I'm looking to your blog for good race ideas in the WA area :)
