Marathon Fear and Razzy Roo Giveaway

Yesterday I had some fun comments from Ryan and Pensive Pumpkin...I hope you don't mind ladies :)

Ryan said...
On a side note, I just signed up for my first marathon. I am slightly terrified. After reading about a few of your earlier marathons, I am now absolutely terrified and worried I took on too much!

Just following Pensive Pumpkin said:
I am dying over Ryan's second comment above, because reading this blog makes me want to curl up and DIE because I will never be this cool. Then I read your terrible Seattle RnR post again, realize that *this will happen to me. probably more than once.* and that you kept running anyway. Then I freak out that I have a "long" four miler scheduled tomorrow. LOL
Ryan- welcome to the club. Crazy club.

Not sure if you know this but if you scroll down until you see RACES on the right hand side of the Blog I have nearly all of my race reports linked, just click the photo to go to the report. I am also working on the Race Reports Tab at the top of the Blog with drop downs to the various race distances COMING SOON for Marathon. I tend to remember every step so get your cup of coffee and prepare for a book..

My first Marathon was anything but perfect. I made some rookie mistakes which lead to a less than stellar performance. Many of you have already read my Post HERE, beware I am very honest with how it all went down (my leg). HEHE.. I know of a couple Bloggers T & G who read the post multiple times in preparation for their first Marathon, I was pretty honored :)As a former college athlete I had high expectations for myself my first time out and I sorta flopped... I crossed the Finish line and immediately said to Muscle Man "Never let me do that again!!" And at the time I meant it. It was painful, horrible, no good, all that training and for what?? To wet myself and run in pain for the last 10 miles of the race... UGH!! Marathons are tough!! Don't let anyone sugar coat it, BUT...

The following year I ran 4 Marathons, qualified for the Boston Marathon and earned Marathon Maniac status by running 3 marathons in less than 90 days. YES my first Marathon was tragic, but the mistakes I made were fixable and I wanted to know the feeling of the perfect Marathon. I have run 6 Marathon, which is a small number in compared to some, and I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed 2 of the 6- Eugene and Rock N Roll Seattle with Marlene, I enjoyed the first Half of two of my Marathons- Rock N Roll Seattle 09 and Rock N Roll Vegas with Amanda and I just muddle through- Green River Marathon and The Boston Marathon...

Every race is different. The training leading up to it, the race itself, and all the excitement surrounding the 26.2 mile journey. My BEST advice to you First Time Marathoners is this:

1. Respect the Distance, do not underestimate the last 6.2 miles!!! Train for the distance and time on your feet.

2. Do not go in with a specific time goal, run to Finish.

3. Recruit a support crew- having friends and family along the course at planned mile markers is necessary.. They will be there with signs, a camera, snacks, a cheer and a smile.

4. Drive the course or parts of it, this will give you a vivid idea of the terrain. I find driving the course calming, but if you know that this will make you more nervous skip it :)

5. Smile at the Finish and wear your medal all weekend!!

Totally going to have to reread that post again! lol
Thankfully, my first marathon was an absolute dream experience! Definitely good to know before I went into it though that it could have been what is was, absolute hell, or anything in between. :)

I am registered to run my first full in April (Eugene) -- and I am starting to get nervous. Not to mention I got sick this past week and fell off the training plan (and probably won't get in the 13 miles scheduled for tomorrow either) -- UGH!! I am trying to stay positive and jump back in when I can :) thanks for all the great running advice :)

Great advice!
Marathon fear is perfectly normal, I think. I was very nervous about my first one, which was Valentines day last year. The course was not sealed and there were almost no people around except at the finish. But I tried to be positive going into iy and it turned out such a good experience.

Going to read the post about your marathon debacle, it's good prep for when I finally get brave enough to run one...

Ryan Schoppe said...

I don't mind at all! I am guessing that fear is not an uncommon reaction to trying to get your body to move and keep moving for 26.2 miles! I fear the run itself but more than that, I fear failure. I don't want to not finish. Not only is this my first marathon, it is my first attempt at running in any organized event. No 5K's or 10K under my belt. That is a big bite to take on for your first attempt! Also, my last 6.2 miles are the toughest part of the course. It is a hilly course anyways, but the highest elevations are in the last 5 miles! I wonder every day what I was even thinking?!?

As great and inspiring as the "good marathon" reports are, the reports of ones that went bad in some way or another were so reassuring to me as I worked towards my first one. Hey, these things happen to other people, even amazing runners. I'm ok. The honesty in your reports is something I really value about your blog. :)

Love the advice for first time marathoners, especially respect the distance - I know a lot of people watch the end of a marathon and say in a cocky voice "I could do that easy!" - it is really aggravating!

Since i am getting close to donating my hair again I will probably get bangs cut back in to hide my high forehead. Which means this is great timing!

Since I am buying YMX colorful clothing I think I like the black reflective head band because it would go with anything AND help them find me if I get lost in the dark!

I still think back to reading that, and re-reading that in prep for my first marathon, and knowing how it COULD GO took so much of the pressure off. And mine went GREAT. In fact, it wasn't until my 3rd marathon that I learned that feeling of, "Oh crud, I am not having a good day today, am I?".

Thank you for sharing the good/bad/ugly.

I love these headbands. You posted something with them a little while back and I got a St Patrick's themed headband and a pair of knee socks. (need to find a St Patrick's race to justify that....). Too hard to pick just one, so anything pink would be my choice.

I can't seem to wear headbands. Apparently I have an odd shaped head because they all slide off! I keep holding out hope to find the magical headband that will stay on.

I remember reading your first marathon report and think more people should. I think people should realize how real running a marathon is and how hard it can be on your body. I was amazed with how you did in that race, and I was incredibly proud with how you handled the mental challenge of it. You were always such an inspiration to me coming from such a tough first marathon to a BQ only months later. Love this post and this reminder.
