Last night I FINALLY had an opportunity to get in a semi Long Run....BUT there is a little Heat Wave going on and it was still 96' at 6:45PM.. Just my LUCK... GULP! My Seattle running body is not prepared for that kind of heat.... so I made the most of it, I loaded up my 4 bottle Nathan Fuel belt and headed to my parents.
Our neighborhood there is no shade because they chopped all the trees, by my folks there is SHADE, which was needed in the HEAT. I said "Hi" to my folks and set out. It went like this...
- Mentally mapped out a route forgetting about the HILLS! My knee was SCREAMING as I went up and down.
- Passed two kids with Jonas Brothers style hair cuts riding their skateboards down a grass hill while using IPhones to Video.
- The lake park was FILLED with folks trying to beat the heat. There was not one square patch of free grass.
- I was getting TIRED at mile 4 when a truck passed. A young guy reached his arm out the window, smiled and gave me a thumbs up. Instantly re-energized.
- Wavering and wishing my water were cold I looked up and was inspired by Ford.. The Ford FOCUS, it was a good reminder, I had to get my head in the run.
- Ahead I saw a high school age kid running toward me in a Wrestling SWEATSHIRT.. He gave a little hoot as he passed and I said "Not hot enough for you huh?" He smiled, CRAZY KIDS!!!
- Dead animal count: 3 possums, 1 cat, 2 crows and 1 frog.
- I passed my Junior High which was plowed to the ground and is being remodeled, made me a little sad.
- It was getting late and dark, I sped up and made it home a sweating, salty mess.
- HOW DO YOU ALL DO IT? I thought about all of you who live and run in constant scorching temperatures, CRAZY CRAZY!! I went through all 4 bottles of luke warm fluid and was still parched.
STATS for 8/15:
8.00- Miles
Time- 1:11:06
Pace: 8:53
Fastest Mile: 8:06 Less Fast Mile: 9:26
HAPPY MONDAY!!

Yeah, what is with this heat! Luckily today is a bike day for me, but we are having heat advisaries for 100? We must seem like such a wussy area to the rest of the world!
UGH I hate the heat. I drank so much water yesterday, it's not even funny!
Congrats on getting out there and getting it done. Sounds like some fun distactions along the way. You are so observant!
I hate the heat too! It just sucks all of the energy out of me! Good job getting out there and getting it done though! I loved all your bullet points. :)
Great job getting through it! It's been sweltering here all summer and I'm just about at the end of my rope! Keep hoping all of this running in the heat will pay off when the Fall comes :)
Yeah, the heat kind of sucks. But you stuck it out and that is what matters. So intregued for tomorrow's post ...
I always freeze by fuel belt bottles before my run, so for one thing they stay cold, but also as they melt, they help to keep you cool around the waist...Good job on your run!
dead kitty?? i can't take road kill when i'm running let alone if it's something which can be a pet! :-(
I did my 19 miles in the heat Sat morning. Ended at the Tacoma Ruston Way Water Front. Had my husband meet me and pick me up there. I knew it would be much better mentally and also temps wouldn't be as bad if I ended near the water.
Great job on sticking it out in the heat! This weekend should be cooler, hopefully perfect weather for my 20 miler!
The heat sucks. I read somewhere that for every degree increase you lose approx 20sec. Not sure if that is true- but I have noticed that with the heat and humidity I am much slower. This week here we are in a summer 'cool down'. High of 80 today- low in the 50's. Wow, does that feel awesome!!!
Congrats on getting your run in!!! You are doing awesome.
Heat! Blah! We have a bit of a break from it right now. I'm hoping it lasts for more than a few hours!
Good pacing, especially with the knee and weather.
8 miles at 8:53? You made great time running in the heat!
This morning was the first time I've been able to run with the temps below 80F for weeks! It was glorious. But to answer your question about the heat, my body seems to have adapted to it. I go through water like crazy (I can easily down over a gallon of water on a run), but as someone else already mentioned, I always freeze my handheld bottle and a couple of other bottles. That way I always have something cold to refill my handheld with when I loop back to the car.
Running in the heat is the worst! I ended up dumping water over my head twice on my run yesterday. LOL Love that the thumbs up gave you a boost. Smiles and thumbs up are my fav when I'm running. I don't know if people even realize how helpful it is to get a little encouragement!
Your body definitely gets used to the heat once you start running it in more but around here by the time I get used to it, the next season has started! Great job getting out for the run!
I love your recall of all the things you encounter. When running in the heat I'm usually doing good to remember my way home!
The heat is definitely tough on the system - I did 13k today, and was wishing it would rain through the whole thing! My theory is, higher heat in the summer when training should mean I'll be a speedy Gonzales for my half in September!
Interested to hear your news tomorrow - hope everything is ok.
It's funny how a little encouragement can get you going again.
You know we have all been there! I am so proud of you for finishing :) And making it a priority for youself!
And what the hell is up with all the dead stuff on your run! Ugh! So sad!
The heat and humidity are tough. I blame my slow pace on it, LOL!
Early morning is what makes it possible for me.
excellent run!!!! I also hate warm drink from my belt....gross
I've never liked running in the heat and humidity either.
I hate running in the heat and humidity. Too bad I live in Virginia...
Good job getting it done.
First of all, I love your posts. Always. Seriously.
Secondly, glad your life is more normal now so you can get your runs back in. :)
I'm in HOTlanta and run in the morning before the heat and humidity gets ya.
Way to get it done!
Winks & Smiles,
Wifey
It's been hot as h#ll here! Way to get out and get it done!!
The first one or two hot days of the year are torture, but then you get acclimated to it. But nice job getting out there!!!!
Sweet run and observations!
The heat on Sunday bordered on unbearable when we were out. I played it safe and walked the end part of our run...no hero here.
