To Finish a Marathon

The Finish Line photos from the Eugene Marathon are in.... I must have posed for the wrong camera man, there were 2 Finish mats....don't do that to people who have run 26.2 miles!! I was a machine on the course, I did not see the photogs that I generally cheese it up for.

So here you have it....

A Sprint to the Finish!! How did the Half Marathon guy get a close up??
The Finish Line was BEAUTIFUL with an announcer, fans in the stands and a Jumbotron. Very cool!!
I did it!! Just after I crossed the Finish Line and received my big amazing medal I yelled... I was sooo pumped!
  • TO FINISH A MARATHON:
There are so many emotions that go through your mind while running a Marathon, excitement, pain, doubt, etc. Fuel and hydration are essential to keep you moving. I wish that I would have had a camera crew with me to see the progression of a REAL Marathon. To see the difference between mile 3 and mile 23. The heavy legs, the fumbled fingers nearly dropping the water cup, the runners dropping left and right in pain with cramps.
On that note who watched the Biggest Loser Marathon Episode Last night??

My first Marathon I ran a 4:11, there is a story behind the reason for that time, but that will forever be my first Marathon time. Daris CRUSHED that time with a 4:02!!! WOW!! For those of you who think that these people only train for 30 days....I would argue that not to be true. I am guessing that many many hours are spent running the grounds of the ranch. The contestants are putting in hours and hours in the gym and on the treadmill. They train for this, they know that the season will end with a 26.2 challenge.
  • So why don't they show the training???
  • Why don't they show the water stops?
  • What did they use for fuel during the run?

I find the Biggest Loser Marathon episode entertaining because I like to watch people run. But the editing is HORRIBLE!! The Editing does not show the hours training, the hydration and fuel during, or the REAL emotions that come with the Marathon. This portrayal of a Marathon makes it look like ANYONE could step out of their front door and do 26.2. UMMMMM NO!! To Finish a Marathon takes training, there is pain, there are injuries, and no one should try to run a Marathon with 30 days to train.

SUGGESTION to BIGGEST LOSER:

Why not tell the contestants at the start that the final 4 will run a Marathon? Why not show what it takes to shed the pounds and gain the physical fitness required to be a runner? This would do a service to those who may one day want to tackle 26.2. Show the training plan and EVERYTHING that it takes to prepare. Editing it out discredits the effort that the contestants put toward their running training.

NOTE to Jillian and Bob:

When training for a Marathon many people gain weight or don't lose any weight. Poor Daris was HUNGRY! While training for a Marathon I am in a constant state of HUNGER. I eat non-stop and do not lose a pound. They totally ignored his effort and his AMAZING result! This guy has the potential to be a great runner, but with that negative feedback they knocked him down to tears. UGH!! Really?? Not everyone wants to spend hours jumping on and off of benches, if he has a passion for running support that. Maybe he gained 2 pounds, but in the grand scheme if he ends up being a RUNNER he will have the active lifestyle which will help him keep off those pounds long term. Afterall look at Sion and his weight gain...did you teach him how to maintain his weight? I think not.

  • Wow I did not think I had such an opinion... What are your thoughts?
  • Have you posted race Finish line pictures? Send me the link, I love finish line pictures :)

HAPPY WEDNESDAY!!

I was LIVID when they went "off" on Daris about the weight!!

I did a mini rant on this as well. I hate being negative but I was really peeved at the marathon and when the trainers lost it about weight gain..I turned the TV off.
(love your race photos as well)

I'm so glad someone else shared my feelings about last night's episode. I love the Biggest Loser, but I often disagree with Bob and Jillian's opinions and tactics (ie. yelling at a contestant about how much he/she weighs - that would make me depressed, not motivated). I have rarely lost weight while training for a marathon because you eat more when you burn more and you HAVE to eat to keep your energy up. Daris did amazing, but I wasn't at all surprised after he kicked butt in their 5K. It bothered me that two of the former contestants that appeared last night had gained back so much weight, and they are not the only ones. Having people put their lives on hold to workout 8 hours a day and eat a closely monitored diet is not teaching them how to "change their lifestyle" because that involved incorporating it into their real lives. I also was really concerned that Koli took off for Vegas to train instead of being with his family for the 30 days because it shows he doesn't know how to balance health and life yet.

Congrats again on your marathon! You look awesome flying across that finish line!!

I haven't seen the episode yet, but from what it sounds like, I can imagine it will tick me off! They show bits and pieces of the workouts, but from the looks of when they did the 5K in Texas episode, Daris is a heck of a runner-his 5K finish time was 21 minutes! And that was weeks before the end of this thing! He has the making of a super quick runner if he was running a 7min mile while still 20+ (30+?)lbs heavier than now, especially if he was training for some real running.... crazy!
The focus is so much on the numbers on this show that it gets hard to watch sometimes. It's funny because halfway through if someone only loses 2lbs they get all the encouragement to keep going, "some weeks are like this", "focus on how far you've come", etc. I was super impressed that they focused so much on Sam's overall health, fitness and body build as his weight loss slowed over the weeks. It was a nice change-and a realistic one!
Daris was already under 200lbs in the episode last week that bumped things down to the final four, I can't imagine they really wanted him losing that much more? At some point it has to be full focus on maintaining vs losing.
And you are right-even just training for a half and for my tris last year, I was starving around the clock. At 5' 4" and 120lbs, I was probably consuming close to 2000 calories a day and not gaining weight. If he was still on a massively restricted diet, I can only imagine how much harder it would be on his body!
Now you need to go write Bob and Jillian and give them a real perspective on things! :)

i can't even watch this show. i got so sick of jillian being a beotch. and based on what you wrote, it sounds like they are still not showing what it truly takes to complete a marathon. has jillian ever run one?? do you know?

notice i can't say a mean thing about bob...love him! he can train me any day.

Whitney said...

Too funny - I freaked out at the TV when Bob and Jillian ripped into him. I was more proud of him for wanting to do well in the marathon, than worring about weight loss. And he KILLED it! I couldn't believe it!

I actually really lucked out with the finish line photos from my first marathon. They caught that moment of sheer joy when i crossed the finish line and threw my hands up. I seriously could not have asked for a better first marathon finish photo (except maybe if I had BQed!)

There were about 10 of them total, but this was the absolute best:

I don't watch the show for that very reason - they don't teach a real life style change, apparant by the fact that many end up heavy again - so sad. And, you're right, being a marathoner I felt like the effort and sacrifices are just not shown!

Love the finish line photos rockstar!

You put into words everything I was feeling about the Biggest Loser. Daris did awesome, I hope he is really proud of himself!

i was SO MAD last night when Jillian got all over Daris!!! SERIOUSLY people gain weight training because you have to EAT! to train correctly for a marathon and fuel properly you HAVE to eat more than they are eating. uggg. i just dont like that they make it seem so easy and now people all over america will just think they can go run one.

anywayssssss :) love your pics!

I totally agree with the biggest loser marathon! They make it look like they just decided one day to do it. I think it would be great if they discussed it throughout the season.

Also, it really bothers me that they were mean to Daris about his weight gain. There are many reasons why someone gains weight during training, and the long term goal is not constant weight loss, it's a healthy lifestyle!

Janice - The Fitness Cheerleader said...

I was pissed right off when they bashed Daris for his weight gain and I even tweeted about it. Then some know it all tweeted back that a two hour run burns 1500 calories or something... My response: how many full marathons have you run? I've run 3 and gained each time.

Seriously - if weight can fluctuate 2 lbs in a day, then how can they even say he gained?

J said...

Ok so I have seen TBL yet, got it on DVR but I am totally used to that show not showing everything. I just take it with a grain of salt. Its reality TV and so they take out a lot of things which is wrong and bad.

Great marathon pictures! You look great!

Michelle said...

First of all...great photos! Congrats again on such a great performance!

And I so agree with you about the Biggest Loser! It's funny because I usually don't watch the show because I don't think they teach people about lifestyle changes. I was flipping channels last night and heard the tease about the marathon and stopped to watch. I really hope Darius continues to be proud of his accomplishment. And I agree, if he continues to run isn't that a better lifestyle change than anything Jillian has spewed at him!?!?

Carly said...

I was thinking the EXACT same things last night. I did catch Ashley and Michael with water and gel packs near the end, but they didn't show anymore than that. I think you're right, it give a complete false sense of what it's like to be a distance runner.
And yes, poor Daris. He has worked so hard and is such a cutie. How could anyone not support his accomplishment?

runkerarun said...

UGH YES. I usually love Jillian, even though her methods can be quite harsh... but seriously?? Daris ran a 4 HOUR marathon. Forget the 2lbs, he's clearly in better overall shape! Hmm, all the others lost 13lbs or more... and finished in over 6 hours. Not that that time is a bad thing, but Daris' love of running and EATING ENOUGH made a huge difference!

Forget them, I hope Daris goes on to qualify for Boston some day :)

Marlene said...

AWESOME pose! I share your "gripes" about the marathon. CLearly the contestants are training and I wish they would showcase more of that. America is getting the WRONG impression about what it takes to prepare for and complete a marathon.

But yeah, GO DARIS! I'm glad I beat his time. LOL!

I was yelling at the TV when Bob said "training for a marathon makes you LOSE weight!" Yeah right, there is sooo much more to it than that!

i haven't yet seen the episode so i'm trying to avoid that part of your post/and the comments but i wanted to say that i never see the photogs when i'm in a race and when i do i get all awkward so it's best that i don't see them haha

graet pics!!

i agree with you on why not show them the drinking water, eating fuel etc. I can say that i am personal friends with 2 past Biggest Loser contestants and they said while on the ranch contestants workout 8 hours EVERYday. They both argue that altho they dont put in the milage, they are physically ready for a big challenge like that. i think its great that they do the marathon on the TV show, but i do think it cheapens it a little for me but maybe because of how its edited. this is horrible to say, omg am i really going to say this?? yes, i am...here it goes...i love to see the Losers lose weight and succeed at the challenges etc., but i do get some enjoyment watching them struggle thru the marathon! lol. I was shocked with Daris' 4:02, that was fast! while i do think Daris is a great runner, i do not believe he ran a sub 21 minute 5k, did u see that episode?
I can tell you that Dr. H is a pretty decent marathon runner so i'm sure he makes sure everything is safe but i agree, the editing is horrible and gives the wrong idea!

Jennifer said...

Yup, I, like everyone else thought Darius got a raw deal. He was AWESOME and he will be a runner, you can see it. I hope he gets a ton of online support.

Bethany + Ryan said...

i would also like to add that Mark Kruger, from BL season 5 has a marathon PR of 3:19. He is a friend of mine and he is an amazing runner!!!!! just in case anyone is interested, lol.

they also eat 1200 calories a day. you can't run a marathon on 1200 calories. Daris ate enough to run that far. i never lose weight while training for a marathon.

Kristin said...

Congrats on Eugene, you rocked! I completely agree with your comments on TBL. I like watching it but do feel that the emphasis on BIG weight loss numbers is misguided (though makes entertaining TV, I guess). Of course the marathon episodes are fascinating to me. I have to admit that before I ran my first marathon last fall I re-watched that portion of the last TBL series because it was encouraging to see that even the comparatively untrained contestants survived, so clearly I (who was well-trained) would be fine. (As I was.) This time was a little more depressing as they all looked tired by mile 1! :( But they all made it. I am furious over the criticism of Daris for gaining a couple of pounds during the 30 days he was home. Yes, he did have a small binging issue...undoubtedly because he was ravenous from all the running and wasn't getting enough food! I was also concerned that they didn't show them fueling during the race, creating the impression that going out and running 26 miles is just another weight loss tool! Finally, I think someone said that the amount of time between when they started losing weight and the marathon was about 5 months... that's almost as long as it takes someone who is already a runner to train for a marathon! It's unreal. Anyhow, I wish someone who was a real runner (not just a trainer) would have a little talk with Bob and Jillian!

Croughwell said...

I totally agree with you about Daris. I felt really bad for him and was yelling at Bob and Jillian from my couch.

The CilleyGirl said...

I'm still not feeling this season of TBL but I watched the marathon part last night just to see how their times compared to mine ;) (A little sad that Mike and Ashley beat my time by 30 seconds but that inspires me to do so much better for my next marathon.) I hated that they yelled at Daris for gaining two pounds, and I agree that the way they edit the marathon leaves it completely unrealistic. Anyone, with hard work, CAN run a marathon -- I proved that -- but it is so much more than they showed.

Michelle said...

Thank you! I was furious last night! I hate that they minimize the marathon! And I'm with Daris!

Erica said...

wow! We were totally sitting here having that same conversation last night! I said "you know they may not have a formal training plan, but when you work out for 8,9,10, 12 hours a day, your body learn to endure and there has got to be running in there." I also thought the same thing what are they eating and drinking? Great post Mel!

Tiffany said...

Bob and Jillian do not run marathons. I even remember Jillian saying she hates to run. They may be trainers but they have NO idea what it takes to run a marathon. Running takes a lot out of you so he deserved those 2 pounds.

X-Country2 said...

I'm still pretty dubious of the math on run times with this show. They had Daris with some 21:XX 5K time. Maybe, but maybe not. Same thing with this marathon time. I'm going to need some non-Biggest Loser race results to totally buy it.

Kerrie T. said...

I so agree with you. Poor Daris.

Your photos still turned out great, Mel! Congrats!

Teamarcia said...

OMG my sentiments re: TBL exactly! They do the marathon and all it takes to run such an injustice by leaving out so much. And to focus and berate poor Daris for a measley 2 lbs weight gain when he just ran an incredible debut marathon is so wrong on so many fronts. Shame on them.

Alison said...

I'm so with you on this Mel, but as Daris himself said no one can take his marathon finish away from him. Could he have made better choices and not resorted to late night eating, probably but as you point out he was hungry and probably wasn't aware how to fuel himself properly. He clearly loves to run I hope he sticks with it, he blew the others out of the water and that's his forever. I really hope he gets in the final and not Koli. They showed Ashley with water at one point and that was it, very misleading. Also very misleading to think ANYONE can run a marathon in 5 months, they are not anyone they train like mad for 5 months most overweight people do not. The message is not genuine.

christinamariejohnson said...

omg i totally agree.
i was yelling at the tv yesterday. bob and jillian really made me mad!
i like daris and he did an amazing job. and he likes running and they should encourage that. its not all about losing pounds...its about learning to love something! and he loves running!
ugh!
love ur post today!!! totally went with what i was thinking! ugh!

Great pictures!

I kept saying to my husband "poor thing was probably starving!" I don't think they give them proper information on how to train for a marathon.

Robyn said...

I watched the episode and totally agree with you. I was like did they not fuel at all? Although I have to say last year's episode was the reason I decided I can do a half marathon. If they could do it, I could and I think that's a great message.

BABBS said...

THANK YOU! I was so annoyed when they ripped Daris. Did he not just run a 4:02 marathon?

Great finish line photos!

On the BL last night it was upsetting that after a season (many seasons) of the trainers being upset with the contestants for focusing too much on "winning" the money, they are faced with Daris who focused on running a great marathon. He had struggled with "finishing" things and not giving up (and potentially a bulimic eating disorder) and he trained (he liked to run while at the ranch too) for a marathon. He set a goal and he did it! He did not stop. Instead of recongizing that he had overcome his tendency to quit, what do they do? Put him down for not caring more about winning the show! Come on!
I believe that show touches many lives and that is a good thing but they should be providing a broader clear consistant message!
ggrrrr. okay the soap box is open for someone else now.

Julie said...

Just found your blog. Love it. Congrats on Eugene! I would love to run that one next year! I'm running my first in Seattle on 6/26. I saw the show last night and had some of the same thoughts. Poor Daris and gaining 2 lbs and the flack he got. I'm with ya on that HUNGER thing. Let the guy fuel himself. :) Looking forward to following your blog...

Amanda - RunToTheFinish said...

it really bugs me that they run a marathon. I mean ok these people do train like 6 hours a day while on the ranch, so they really are in some amazing shape...but since they don't show that I don't think the average joe gets it

Momma Twitch said...

Amen! It made me SOO mad last night. I totally agree with everything you said. They need to change their way of training and make it more of a life style change rather than a quick drop thing.

Navy Wife on a Diet said...

BL loser is all about extremes. Going from extremely fat, to extremely thin in the shortest time possible. Sure there is a Dr. on the show so I guess everything is "healthy" but is it wise?? I think back to Helen last season and how she looked like a drug addict at the finale. So drawn and frail - she was obviously severely restricting her diet. But that sort of thing is encouraged by BL to create the "wow" moments at the end. Its sad.

Then you get Daris who did the responsible thing by taking the HIGHER road of *athleticism* vs. just general weight loss, and he gets criticized for it.

I would love to see a show were they take average guys and girls and turn them into marathon runners. I want to see that journey. The guts, glory, blood, sweat and tears. Not just a number on a scale each week. *yawn*

The Jogger Blogger said...

Wow, Daris just broke my heart last night when he cried and talked about how ashamed he was of himself for his weight gain. I think Bob and Jillian were too hard on him-the guy is under 200 pounds! That being said, it is still one of my favorite shows, I just wish Daris wasn't made to feel so horribly. They need to lay off Daris and come whip me in to shape...I need it way more than he does now!

Stephanie said...

Bob and Jillian should have never yelled at him. Running a marathon is such a huge accomplishment and to yell at him over two pounds was terrible.

Michel said...

Love your race pics!

I completely agree on the Jillian thing last night on BL!!! OMG I felt so bad for Daris. That kid can run and he's fast, his first marathon and he smoked everyone! His body was starving to keep up with the training. Maybe the producers should get real athletes who have trained for marathons for the marathon episode if they continue to have it. What's that t-shirt saying? My sport is your sports punishment?
I am training for my first marathon. If I loose weight, bonus. Reality is I just want to finish it!

ShutUpandRun said...

Yeah I was yelling at the TV when they got on Daris about the weight. I for sure gained weight during marathon training and while I ate more and ate well, I don't know that I ever overate. It just goes with the territory. I was pissed at them.

Also - I think the whole running a marathon thing on the BL is crazy. Unless these people have properly trained (as in, done their long runs, etc) it just doesn't seem safe to me. Yes, they are in shape, but like with any fitness goal you need to be in shape and prepared for the event you are running. It's not enough to run a few 10Ks on the treadmill and lift weights. Maybe real marathon training is going on behind the scenes, but like you point out, then show us that part!!!

Thank you for putting into words what I thought of the Biggest Loser marathon! I do think Daris has the big picture. He is focused on creating a healthy lifestyle. I did vote for him in the final 3; I just couldn't vote for Koli because he wants that confetti to rain down on him.

Currently, I'm training for a half marathon on June 26. Do you think there's enough time for training to run a full marathon on Sep. 4?

Just about anyone can finish a marathon in 6 and a half hours. That's walking at over a 15 min/mile pace. Go to any marathon and watch the walkers that start and finish, happens all the time. I know there are some pretty good discussions about running, jogging and walking the distance. To me 26.2 is the distance, whether it takes 2:10 or 6:45.
