Tall Mom the Maniac

A few of my Fleet Feet buddies tried to recruit me to run the Capital City Marathon on May 16th. The cool thing about running the race is that I would have qualified for Bronze level Marathon Maniac status HERE. Having pushed so hard in Eugene I decided that I would not risk injury and run. I have gone back and forth about trying for the Marathon Maniac status....lowest level mind you.

***Bronze Level:
3 Marathons within a 90 day time frame.

With Eugene on May 2nd and Rock N Roll on June 26th all I have to do is find a 3rd Marathon to complete before August. But would that really make me a Maniac? I don't plan to do Marathons over and over for the years to come? Am I really worthy of the Maniac status if I only do it once? I still have not decided....then enter the Green River Marathon HERE.

Green River Marathon Info:
June 5, 2010 at 8:30 AM
Cost: FREE!!
Can purchase a shirt for $15
Kent to Alki- close to home
Mostly Flat

The wheels in my head are turning. On my training plan June 5th would be the last LONG run week prior to taper for Rock N Roll. I could use it is a training run, take it slow and do it for FUN!! And it is FREE...

But then there are the What ifs??
  • What if I get injured?
  • What if doing this run makes my legs tired for Rock N Roll?
  • What if the Green River killer comes to get me? (JK )
  • What if the Marathon Maniacs find out that I do not plan to repeat this 3 Marathons is 3 months feat, will they kick me out? (JK)
What are your thoughts???
Should Tall Mom Run a FREE Marathon next weekend making her 26.2 miles closer to being a MANIAC??

This is my friend Tammy who is an AWESOME Maniac...

I love how you posted your face on her picture!! You are too funny! I think you should try it, since it is FREE!!!

Don't you have to try? I think it would be different if you were trying to qualify for Boston in Seattle. But you already got your BQ, so why not?

Wouldn't it be amazing to be able to wear a marathon maniacs shirt at Boston in 2011?

Go for it! You are going to be running long that day anyway so might as well do it with other people at a race! If you aren't feeling it or things go wrong you can always not finish the marathon. I think it would be a fun race to do!

i think it'd be sooo cool to be a maniac. go for it girl :)

That photo rocks! Cut and paste humor is the best!
I think that you should do it and use it as a training tool. You know you are competitive and will push it so use it as a mental tool too. Make a plan and stick to it!
A free race is pretty cool!

if you are 100% sure you can go into it as a TRAINING RUN and KNOW YOU WILL TAKE IT NICE AND SLOW AND EASY then I say go for it! But if you have a feeling that competitive kick might hit you and there's ANY CHANCE you will push yourself more than you would for any other training run I say probably not. You've worked too hard for Rock N Roll to get hurt on a random sign up race

Definitely tempting... for me, it's not worth the risk of injurt and/or burn out. A marathon is a big deal and even at a slower pace, it can take a lot out of you.

That being said, only YOU know best what you can handle and of course I would support you 100%!

DO IT! but go slow and dont get hurt...

That pic is hilarious!
I have a maniac status, but I haven't registered yet. Funny, I tried for it a few times last year and was bumed when I missed it. Now that I qualified, I haven't really been to excited to sign up. Mission accomplished I guess!

I did try to do some doubles in my training before going into my back to back marathons. If you're injury prone, wait...it's not worth it. You've done great so far and I imagine you want to keep running all summer :)

Nice photo shop!

I say go for it... it's free, so if you aren't feeling good, you can drop out anytime that you want to. You have to go for it at least once, right?

My two cents: if you were doing your long training run anyway, why not go for it. That being said, remind yourself it's for training, the Maniac status is just a bonus. If you're worried about tacking on those few extra miles, you could use them as a cool down and walk. Chances are if you get hurt, you probably would have done so on your training run, too. But, you won't! You'll take it nice and easy, and enjoy the scenery. :)

PS--I know you...If you don't do it, and do your long training run on the Foothills instead, you'll be thinking, "I should have done the Green River Marathon. I'd have my maniac status now." :p

Do it! Becoming a Maniac is an accomplishment and you don't have to have intentions to repeat :-) Consider it a training run and you'll be golden.

I don't care free or not. Take it from me...a hurt runner is not good and it can happen in an instant. Run smart and think about what your goals are before you do too much. I am dying right now and would do anything to put one foot in front of the other. Plus you don't need to be in a maniac club...we all already know you are amazing....hello B.Q!

I have no personal desire to be a Marathon Maniac, but I am a big fan of using an organized race as a training run...and have spent $70 and up to do so! Free is good! Good luck!

I think you need to prioritize your races. How important is Rock N Roll? Is this for fun or for PR? If it is for a PR then I would stay focused on it.

Good luck!!!

you can try it but take it easy. use it as a training run and just enjoy it. or run it with a friend and help them get thru i!

DO IT! You can't pass up a free race. and use it as a training run. You know you want to Maniac Mel!

That's awesome! Go for it! I think my hubby actually qualifies for either bronze or silver (I'd have to check the exact dates) from his streak in 2006/2007... I think he's just doing halfs for a while though.

F - For
R - Ridiculously
E - Even
E - Entertaining..the idea of not...of course you should! It's FREE!! Use it as a long training run. You are totally conditioned to handle the miles. Proceed with confidence!

please, please don't get hurt or burnt out before seattle!

Definitely hard to turn down a free race. If you feel up to it AND it won't hurt your Seattle chances then use it as a training run but only if you promise yourself not to compete and treat it as a training run. Of course, I've never run one marathon yet alone 3 in 3 months so I'm probably not the best person to give advice!

Laurie said...

Oh, I forgot, love the picture! You did a great job with it!

If you can really run it for FUN and take it super easy with a slow time, I say go for it. If you won't be able to keep the reigns on yourself, I vote no.

The top they send you is ugly anyway. :o)

Yes!!! Do it!

Just do it!

If you can get the competition out of your mind, I think you could do it. Take is easy like any other long run and even walk the last bit if you need too.

Wow- what a tough decision!
The things that kinda swing towards doing it is; it's free (!) and close. if you can run it without a target time and without the need to compete and just use it as a work out...you should go for it!

MCM Mama said...

Jumping on the bandwagon here - if you can run it as a training run and really dial back the last miles, go ahead and do it. Just take it really easy.

good luck with your decision!

Cynthia O'H said...

I wouldn't. You're still recovering from your marathon and don't want to set yourself up for an injury. I think that even if you plan to take it easy, you'll still give it your max.

Do it! do it! DO IT!!!

I so wish I was up for a full! you thnk I could do it? I have only done 13.1 since April 26...i'm willing to try....

Jamie said...

Since it's free, you can always take it slow and just "relax" with it. Give it a try. Good luck with all of those races! :)

Love the picture!

Do it!

Hi!

You should definitely try the race! Just make sure that you check with the Marathon Maniac officials to see if the race counts...I was asking about races for my Little Bro for the Half Fanatics, and as long as it is on their Race Calendar, then it should count! They were great about getting back to me asap. It is just worth asking if you want to be a Maniac!

Congrats! I LOVE being a Half Fanatic....what a HUGE accomplishment to be a real Maniac! :)
