Tall Mom Treadmill Tales 1

Stats for 2/28:
10.02-Miles
1:25:10- Time
8:31- Pace
Running at 6am in High Altitude Beavercreek Colorado.

Treadmill PR!!! LOL!! The furthest I have ever run on a treadmill was 5 miles, I am not a treadmill runner. I woke at 5:45AM to get the the gym by 6AM to get my Long run in. Fitting it in this week will be tough. I HOPED for 16 but knew I would be happy with 10.

Picture this:
  • Tall Mom gets on high tech treadmill and stares dumbfounded... Hmmmm.. manual start. Yippee the Kardasians are on the TV, shoot the headphone connection sucks. UGH! Switch treadmills.
  • Set up water bottle, plug in headphones, manual start. Wait I need miles not time, UGH! Restart. No Kardashians, UGH! Settle for "Deep Blue". Run.
  • Can't breath, UGH! I can see myself in the window because it is still dark out, UGH! Focus you can do this!! What does 7mph mean? How does this translate to pace? Can I wear my Garmin? Will it work? Who knows? STARE AT SCREEN!! Why are the miles passing so slow?
  • Towel falls off and goes crashing to the floor... 3 miles in. I note the time, hit pause, get towel, get back on treadmill. Hit Quickstart, it restarts, UGH!
  • Adjust back to miles, continue watching lame movie with a lot of fighting and diving under water for far more time than humanly possible. Feel like I am breathing under water.
  • Hitting a good stride, suddenly stomach feels horrible.. UGH! I want to get my 5++ miles for the Cassie's Virtual relay (Who knew I would get booted from the team for the FAST Shelly). Hit Pause, pause lasts 60 seconds, where is the bathroom?? Almost went in the Men's, UGH!
  • Back to treadmill to start over (AGAIN) quickstart, people are starting to fill the Resort gym. I switch from 7mph to 6.8mph, I am sucking wind, darn altitude, UGH!
  • Beautiful snow and a heated pool just outside the window. The man I thought was standing still in a cowboy hat in the dark is a statue, DER UGH!
  • STARE at miles, come on!! Why is this taking sooooo long? Movie over, watch interview with USA figure skater, why didn't they show his performance? Must have missed it. UGH!
  • Change the channel to Roesanne... Wow this show is stupid but I only have energy to run not to change the channel again. UGH!
  • SOOOO close... I am tired and I want to be done.. 3....2....1... STOP! Victory, some dude is staring at me and wants the treadmill although there are 3 others open, UGH!
  • Done, but I forgot to take a picture, UGH! Boring post, check!!
  • Later in the day visit the concierge for info on running outside.. DOWN a huge hill and either run back up for take a bus back to the top.. Hmmmm UGH!

So that was my first experience and as rough as it was and with all the "UGHS" I am very proud of myself and would not trade a minute, well maybe the minutes restarting the darn machine.

LESSON: You will never regret running, but you will regret the run you don't get done.

HAPPY MONDAY and

WELCOME to MARCH!

that last line is so true!!

i've accidentally pushed reset before and get really annoyed with myself haha. and re: the miles sloooooooowly passing by: i put a big towel over it so i can't see and stare. it's helped me lots in getting through longer runs on the tm

Our gym resets after 30 seconds, so if I need a bathroom break I know I will have to start from scratch. SO annoying. I agree about covering the screen, it helps. SOrry your outdoor run was not good today either, you'll get it!

Good for you for actually getting 10 miles in. That is so tough on a treadmill, which is why so many people refer to them as "dreadmills!"

Lisa said...

Ugh. That sounds so frustrating, but you got through it and you'll know how to use the machine when you get back on next time! Plus, you ran 10 miles already this morning! Way to start the week/month off on a good foot!
have a great day!

Way to go. I hate the mill... and the longest run I have done was 5.

Hi Mel, Channel 29 is HGTV, just an fyi :). A treadmill PR is a PR nonetheless so relish in that victory, especially at altitude! Had you been outdoors, it probably would have been harder on the lungs. Ask the hotel dude if Vail pass bike path is plowed. I can't imagine it is b/c it is pretty windy and not sure the plow would know where to go, but who knows. Hope you get some great runs in this week in that gorgeous scenery....but also know that Beaver Creek is the mecca for cross country and downhill skiing :). Will be in touch later this week. I do have to work next Monday so would have to be earlier on Sunday. We'll see what's on your plate and also the weather. Take care!

i SOOOO feel your pain and frustration. every mile i slog on that thing seems to suck more life out of me than it gives back (HENCE my very low milage. very. low.)
your last sentence needs to be my MANTRA.

Altitude is a bitch - I can def say that was the case for you!
Great job on sticking it out! Have a safe trip!!! Hugs to you!

Nice job getting the 10 done on the treadmill - you have more willpower than me!

wow. nice job on gettin' 10 done on a treadmill! wow. I don't know how y'all get these amazingly long runs done on them. AND at 5:45 am!;-)

You are doing a great job running in that thin air! And I think you did great on the treadmill. I know I can't stand the pressure of an unfamiliar machine. All those buttons. Mine is so easy! 3 buttons. On. Fast. Slow.

Enjoy your trip!

I find dreadmills good for only one thing: intervals. I started my running on dreadmills and did not like it much but I wanted to lose weight so I persisted. Our Y has really nice treadmills with all the bells and whistles and still I could not get into dreadmill running.

So congratulations that you were able to skick with it and did your run. Hope you can get some time to run outside.

OH WOW, way to get it done! You are a trooper for hanging in there. It's a LONG time to run in place especially with the little mishaps/annoyances.

GO MEL!

Now you really have to tell me where you are because it sounds to me like you are in Creted Butte and if so I am just down the valley from you in Gunnison and since I lived for about 5 years in CB I can tell you where to run!

Haha....sounds like quite the process. I've never ran on a treadmill but I'm sure it would be exactly the same as that! At least you are getting the runs done :)

Your recaps are too funny! Welcome to the world of long distance treadmilling!

well mad props for doing the 10 on the TM, i have total empathy! at least you had a movie...for awhile. and YAYAYAY for march.

Why is it that the treadmill miles seem to take FOREVER? Way to get it done, Mel. :)

Kim said...

Aww, I've had runs like that. This is why I have my own treadmill...

Anna said...

Way to get it done, even though it was tough. Living below sea level, can't imagine what my lungs would feel like in that kind of altitude!

Lisa said...

Funny post. I had a similar experience on the treadmill yesterday. I was trying to change the display so I could see my pace and instead I somehow stopped the treadmill. Ugh. Frustrating.

Nice job though for sticking it out. And not a boring post at all :)

Hi Mel,
Wow, way to kick it into high gear on the treadmill!! You were moving so fast and for ten miles:) I can't keep up that pace on the mill....go you!

Carly said...

Way to go! I can sympathize. I'm in ME, so sometimes the treadmill is a necessary evil!

Erica said...

but even through all that you still did it! Good Job Mel!

I am getting better with the 'mill after going through this winter, but I sitll dont like it and I have hit the dern reset WAY too many times!

Great treadmill recap! I was laughing thru the whole read. Last time I stayed in a hotel I was so excited to run on the treamill and I could never get the stupid thing to speed up so I was running (if you can call it that) something like a 15 min pace. Whatever it was, it was too fast to walk but too slow to run. I looked and felt like an idiot!!!

I love the lesson!!

Great post Tall Mom! I totally related to all points of that run! Treadmill running really can be hard!

Mel - I was just in Beaver Creek skiing 3 weeks ago. It is beautiful.
I was staying in Avon - and walked up the path to the resorts one afternoon. I then thought about running up - but decided to walk again. I used my garmin to check alltitude - I think it was almost 700 feet and almost 3 miles. I road the bus back down. Watch out for freezing on the path from melting snow.

Enjoy - the views are breath taking.

10 on a treadmill is tough anywhere, let alone on a strange one in a strange place with thin air. Congrats!

Aneta said...

thats quite the adventure u had at the gym. hhahahhaha. u r funny!
10 miles on the treadmill is awesome. thank god there was no 60 minute time limit, as there sometimes is in gym!

i love that last line that you wrote. its always the run that you least want to do that turns out the best!

Happy Monday!

April said...

Love it!! Great run recap!
Way to go plugging those miles away!! Now you know why we call it the dreadmill!;)

Alisa said...

I did 20 miles on the treadmill once, I had to restart 3 or 4 times since the time kept timing out on me. I can't believe I ever did that--ugh.

Way to get the miles DONE

Shells said...

I have to cover up all the numbers and little counter parts because they drive me nuts! 10 miles at any pace on a treadmill is awesome!!!

MCM Mama said...

Good job surviving the 'mill!

ajh said...

I"m a 5 mile maximum 6 miles under duress on the treadmill so I feel your pain. Give me those freezing temperatures for a long run any day.

MJ said...

Good job on the run :) even though it was on a sucky treadmill!

Stephanie said...

Great Job! You just reminded me of the time I was in Chicago for work, and I decided to run on the treadmill in the hotel gym. It overlooked downtown Chicago, which was really cool(it was on the top floor) but there was a sauna right by it, and it was sooo steamy and hot in there that I was sweating before I even started up the treadmill, plus I could see myself in the windows, and I hated it! I only got in 3.5 miles that day...good for you for doing 10 miles!!! And hang in there...being away for your boys has to be hard...I know it is for me! But just think how wonderful it will be when you get home to them!

Amanda - RunToTheFinish said...

ok I was just reading someone's race recap about running with friends and seriously I am soooo excited for Seattle, I think having you there is going to make it possible for me to really hit my 4 hour goal!

oh the treadmill, I have to play so many mind games to make those runs work!

Great job with 10 on the treadmill! I don't know how to set them for distance not time. I did that when I ran 7 on the treadmill, it shut off at 60 min, JUST before I hit 7 miles! Ugh. Stopping and starting is a pain!

I laughed out loud at the statue guy standing there all that time and he was a statue! I would have been creeped out!

Denise said...

great job getting in the long run on the treadmill. i ran 20 on it the other day and am hoping that's it for the winter. i need the snow to go away so i can get back outside!

Valerie said...

Wow! Great job on your TM run. I haven't run on one in so long I forgot how long it takes to get everything set up and accustom to the equipment. And, I am notorious for always letting my towel fall off of the treadmill....LOL
