Negative Splits Tall Mom

Stats for 2/23:
Time- 48:01
6.01- Miles
7:59- Pace
Cool day, legs felt strong, started to lightly rain at the end.

I feel that one of my biggest issues in races is I get so excited that I go out too fast and do not have the steam to hold the pace. One of my goals for running this year is to teach my body how to start slow and get faster. My Marathon training plan called for intervals, but I opted for negative split training instead, I will get plenty of interval training on the DREADMILL in Colorado next week.

Mile Splits:
1-8:36
2-8:20
3-8:16
4-7:59
5-7:40
6-7:05
Average= 7:59

By the end I was breathing hard, very challenging workout and it felt GREAT! I did not have my Ipod so I was really able to focus on my form. You know what I found? I have abs!!! My core was working and I could feel the tightness as I sped up, for a Mom of 2 this is super exciting!
  • What Goal do you have this year? What are you doing to reach that Goal?
  • Today Amanda (HERE) is coming to run with me at lunch for my "PQR" run, so excited to have some company.

The Winner of the Running Essentials Giveaway will be announced tonight, with soooo many entries I did not have time to pick. So come back tonight.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY!

Love that photo - you look so happy (and skinny!). :)

Way to go on the negative splits! You nailed each mile faster.... awesome!! This is something I'd like to work on myself.

WOOHOO for Tall Mom abs!! A strong core makes you a stronger runner!

Happy Hump Day!

Well, being a goal freak myself, you're a speakin' my language!;-)
I'd say my lil' athletic weekly goals are helping me ultimately race well at both Lavaman (in ~5 wks!!), and Vineman.

oh, and I have to chuckle that Marlene is FIRST again!!!!;-)

I like that even though your M Training plan calls for one thing, you make it work for you.

I just completed my run with baby jogger - oh, and baby! Time stunk... but the sun was shining! Yay!

That is awesome! I love the idea of negative splits! You rocked them.

My goal is to "toughen up" (as you already know). Having a goal in mind, and for a good cause, and for people I love is making it easier than ever to "get over it" and press on! :)

Hooray on the abs!! I'm trying to do the same thing myself. I'm getting there...

You will be on the treadmill while you are here in Colorado because it has been cold!

Where are you headed?

In Gunnison this morning it was -20!

Love the pink headband!!! You look so cute. :) Unlike me, I look like a ghost when I'm done..yuck! :P Maybe you should give 'running beauty' tips?? lol

My goal this year is to successfully become a 'runner', meaning more than my 12 miles at 13min/mile each week.

Tall Mom,
would you maybe be able to do a post on how to achieve negative splits?
As a new(er) runner, i still have trouble with that. Any advice??

thanks so much!

Awesome job on the run! My main goal for this year is to strengthen my core - kettlebells has been helping immensely. I know it will improve my running.

Awesome splits! My goal for races is similar. I want to not start out too fast so I have some left at the end. This is VERY HARD for me. I was thrilled at my half with my even miles. I felt like I was speeding at the end but was actually doing basically what I started with.So it wasn't negative splits but it was waaay better than slowing down!

Yayayaya for rockin' that run! Awesome. And, sidenote, I love the sore feeling I get in my abs after a long or intense run like that. Always my trouble area!

Those are some great looking splits! Good for you. I too have had my share of races where I go out too fast. I just repeat to myself in that first mile, "it has to feel slow" and usually I do ok. I also have to remind myself to let people go at the start b/c chances are, they're heading out too fast--it's always a great feeling to catch them later on when they die. Good luck with the neg. split training.

Jo Lynn said...

You *are* looking really good with all this mileage you're putting in. Enjoy it girlie! ;)

Badgergirl said...

Nice job on the splits! I've got the same problem, always going out too fast for the first mile of any run. But it never feels like I'm going too fast. Guess that's something I've got to work on this year.

Way to rock the progressive run!! Very nice!

Every time I see you in that shirt, I think I need it!! You look so cute!

Way to go on the negative splits and on feeling the abs. One of my favorite things post-run is when I can feel it in my core.

Great picture! You really look like you are losing weight! It's all the speedy marathon training!

You really are getting so fast and for longer and longer distances. You are going to have a great race pace!
