6'0 tall, former athlete, mother of 3, struggling to keep up on the RUN of daily life.

Welcome new Tall Mom Bloggy Pack Members!! For FUN I post my mid-week training Runs in the form of ABC bullet topics with 3 bullets for each letter. Gives me something to think about during my run. Next week will be PQR and so on… Can you tell I am a MOM??

Stats for 2/18:
Time- 54:48
6.1- Miles
8:58- Pace
Clear day but very windy, pressed for time and a little stressed. Hill repeats.

M- Motion/Mental
  • There are some runs where it feels like I am just going through the motions, today was one of those days. My whole body hurt and I could not find my speed. It is days like this that truly test my mental toughness, the "Wall" is a real thing so I need to train to climb over it.
  • My Hill repeat workouts are tough, with BQ mentality I tackle them as best I can. Today was 14 x 200 meters with 2 minutes erst between sets. Trouble was I was running late so I was in motion the whole time. Although I was not exactly SPRINTING up, I did not take 2 minutes to rest between sets.
  • With the Sunshine award (will be passing it along soon) and all the comments on the Running Essentials Giveaway HERE, and donations to Breast Cancer HERE, I was in a happy mental state. There is so much I want to do to PROVE myself in running, I want to keep upward motion toward my goals. So I have been really looking at my training plan and asking others for input. I am hoping to have my Tall Mom Marathon plan done ASAP so I can stop stressing.
N- Never
  • Lately it seems like I never have time to fit in a good stress free run. I got out the door late and I knew I had a meeting to get back to. I leave for a business trip very soon and I am already stressing about not being able to get in my Marathon training.
  • At repeat 7 I thought I was on 8, it is VERY easy to lose count. Oh how I wanted to just be on 8. But I am a RULE FOLLOWER, just ask Zoe, even in a Free Race I am anal. If I can complete the workout I will I never give up, so I did ALL 14 repeats.
  • Mid way through the workout I felt a PAIN I have never felt before. Shooting pain from my left shoulder blade to the top of my neck. OUCH! It hurt but I kept going. Later that night Muscle Man massaged the area, he could tell I was in extreme pain, nothing made it feel better. Being the Muscle Man that he is, he quickly knew the cause of my problem. Somehow I have strained or irritated my Trapezius muscle (see picture below) on the left side. I iced and took some Tylenol. Any ideas on how to make this feel better??
O- Observations
  • When I started my repeats I thought about doing an over and back. The hill I run on has two sides, I usually stick to one side because it has a clear finish line for the .12 and the pitch is less vertical. My first 2 repeats I ran up the TOUGH side. I observed two men, not together, but each had the cheesiest grin when they saw me. What is that about? Maybe they were thinking "Why is the tall chick in bright pink running up this hill? Glad I am not her."
  • Do you ever observe all the TRASH on the side of the road. It really urks me!! People really? There was a smashed paper cup at the bottom of my hill, it annoyed me to no end and I told myself I would kick it to the side when I was done. The WIND was rough on this workout, on my way back down repeat 11 the paper cup has been blown away. Oh thank you Mr. Wind, I was OCD fixated on that cup.
  • Do you ever have the feeling you are being watched? My hill is near some business that has semi trucks wait for 10-30 minutes before entering. The man in the truck observed me through his rear view, DUDE!! find something to do, this almost made me switch to the TOUGH hill, almost :)
PS. For Fun post your comment in M N O Format

***Tomorrow is High Five Friday. Leave a comment or Email me if you have a race, event, birthday, giveaway, etc :)

I have a real problem with my trapezius all the time, I just make sure to stretch really well. Sometimes I have to get someone to help me so I get the full benefit of stretching. Hope it feels better.

I have a RoadID giveaway going on if you want to put it on your high five friday. Thanks.

M- I hope your shoulder/neck/back muscle thing feels much better soon.

N- Never - I think it's never going to get to be spring here and I want to wear my new Nike (oh! another N!) shorts I got last week on sale.

O- The creepy observers kind of gets to me too. I leave the mill that I work at at lunch to run all around the mill neighborhood and there are tons of strange observers. Kind of creeps me out sometimes and then I try to imagine that maybe they are watching and thinking they could do that too. :)

i read an article one time about a guy who picks up every piece of trash he sees while he's out for a run. i think it's a great idea, but i admit, i'm not doing it. maybe one run a month i should do that...hmmm...

Mel - You are a rock star! Way to fight through those repeats! Sorry about the trap. I seazed mine up just minutes before the Bermuda Half. Massage and Advil did the trick for me, but it took a few days.

Velma said...

Feel better Mel - maybe you can get a massage?

I also hate the trash on the side of the road, and I sometimes do a trash run to pick it up!

(M)otion/(M)ental - I've been going through the motions of my Taper this week and getting a little (M)ental about the (M)arathon next weekend!

(N)ever - Never give up! I always think about the frog cartoon choking the bird that's trying to eat it! LOL!

(O)bservations - My hill has broken bottles smashed all over it and I have been meaning to head over there to clean it up. I always worry I will slip on the glass and hurt myself.

Emily said...

M- Majorly impressed you did 14 hill repeats, way to work it!

N- No way are you not going to rock your marathon. (Like the double negative) You are rockstarring your way through training and will be awesome!

O- M.G. I am super excited to run with you ladies on Saturday. Shoot me an email with some details when you get a chance.

HIGH FIVE early because it's almost Friday! Yay. OOOh and SUNSHINE!!! You're officially tagged. Check my latest post :)

M-massage. A professional one, and someone who knows how to handle athletes.

N-nice!! Nice work on the hills, and for doing all 14! Impressive and inspirational, hopefully to that creeper truckdriver, too! I hate feeling watched!

O-on shoulders, mine will get achy/ radiatingly sore mid-run, before my legs, unless I consciously make the effort to keep them as relaxed as possible.

Anonymous said...

Oooh, and I would kinda like a high-five... This weekend I get to run two days in a row, for 30 min each, the first time since my stress fracture in November!!

Anonymous said...

M- mental toughness- totally a phrase i use for myself, too, and a concept i am struggling with lately. i'm just not INTO running these days and it hurts me to be so challenged mentally to get out there all the time :(

N- NOT OKAY not not not okay- trash on the ground. seriously it makes me so mad. and CIGARETTES! people throw those on the street like it's acceptable. hellloooo people. and at the beach?! there are kids in teh sand. it makes me so angry.

O- as in "o" in the xoxo chain :) great job on your repeats!

I hope you can find some time for a stress free run... it's tough when you feel that you are always on the GO and rushing to fit it all in.

AWESOME JOB tackling those hill repeats when you were dealing with a mental battle most of the way through. This will make you stronger!

Ugh, I hate it when people stare at me running. I stuck my tongue out at a lady who was gawking at me from a bus shelter during one of my runs last week. Once I had run by, I couldn't believe I just did that! Had to chuckle to myself...

Sarah said...

I had three truckers watching me last week while I ran and it totally creeped me out! SO I know what you mean. What is up with that?

MCM Mama said...

I'm such a mom - I immediately assumed you were going to talk about Mom's Night Out LOL!

Great job on the mental toughness!

I have had a huge knot for months in my trap muscle. i have a heating pad thing - got it from walmart. just heat it up in the microwave and it usually stays hot for about 45 minutes. I just put it on there at night to loosen the muscle.

Mrs. M said...

I hope your trap feels better soon! Maybe a nice (albeit painful) massage?

Ewa said...

I hope your muscle stops bugging you soon.
Trash on trails (or anywhere else) drives me nuts. We always have a paper grocery bag in the car for trash. When I go hiking I carry a plastic bag and collect whatever trash I see. Can't really do that when I am running trails. I think it would look a bit funny, me running with a grocery bag full of trash in the middle of nowhere. I am sure it would not be convenient running with one either.
Feel better soon.

I can't MNO format post because that would take too much thought and I'm incapable of that process. Haha. Just stopping by cuz I love your posts. I wanted to say, too, that I would LOVE to try that blackberry GU, blackberry is my favy flavor ... but I have severe stomach problems with the sugars in that stuff :( and use Hammer products. Happy Thursday.

guh, sometimes running can be a little stressful and make you worry, especially with marathon training. but it's all worth it.... eventually! ;) i think you're a trooper. and hope your neck feels better soon. boo for that.

Anonymous said...

i could just echo all of yours :)

m: mental. especially on tough tempo outing. i need to get my head in the game sometimes

n: never quit. even if i have to crawl to finish i will do that

o: out of this world. because after a good run i feel like i'm on cloud 9 and a million miles away

Mrs. Mom said...

M-Love the positive things that you focus on to think about while running
N-I'm a big ruler follower too, but lately my knees have been hurting since I switched into marathon training mode, so I've been trying not to feel too guilty when I miss a big run or shorten it at least.
O-I'm a big observer too and I HATE it when people driving by literally do a 90 degree turn just to watch.

Love all your creative posts!

Aron said...

alright lady, NO MORE STRESSING. i know you are stressed/worried about your training, etc, and its probably affecting your runs. let it go, move on, follow the schedule, you will get there :) be confident in your training and that you are doing what you can and it will all come together!

Bethany + Ryan said...

Mel, Nice Outlook. yeah trash sucks. i see people in Boston eat their burger king and then throw the wrappers and cups on the ground. it makes me to angry. one time my grandfather saw a woman change a diaper and then throw it on the sidewalk and then go into a building. he got a pair of tongs and picked up the diaper and places it on her windsheild. LOL

how was your running form? where were your shoulders? look at some of the pics of you running, you might be surprised to find that your soulders are higher than you think! fold in half and hug your thigs, keep higging as you try to stand up...ahh...i love that stretch!

M- My Wild Goose Chase 10k on Saturday is hopefully going to be under an hour. I need all the positive vibes I can get! *crossing fingers*

N- Not going to skip out on todays run even though I'd rather be taking a nap.

O- Oh boy! You're loved! You got lots of sunshine, I gave you one on Tuesday, too!

Hope your trap stops hurting soon.

Aimee said...

(M)uscle strains are never fun. I hope your trap feels better soon!

I think it's awesome that although you weren't feeling the best on your run you (N)ever gave up and did all your repeats! You rock!

creepy (o)bservers would really freak me out. I don't want to put crazy thoughts into your mind, but just remember to always tell people where you're running, how far, how long, when you think you'll be done, etc. It's always better to be on the safe side!

And (O)h...I tagged you for a Sunshine award too. You are one of my favorite blogs to follow! :)

Hope you are feeling better! And I hope you get to just get out and run soon. :)

N - I hope you Never feel that pain again. I hope it is better after the massage, ice and tylenol. We must have been really working!

O - Right now I am observing my boss asleep in his chair...snoring! I wish I wasn't!

Lynette said...

Okay my dear. Alternate heat and cold on the muscle. Ibruproferen products will help with pain AND inflammation.

In geocaching we do this thing called CITO. It stands for Cache In Trash Out. There are even whole events planned around it. One of the points of geocaching is to preserve and improve the environment we get to enjoy! So, I totally get your frusteration:)

Feel better buddy!!!!

Well done on the hill repeats, and getting them done! (I can understand anal ... just ask my sisters, they're always laughing at me not wanting to veer from my training programme!). Hope your shoulder feels better soon :)

As for people watching, I live in a small town, EVERYONE is watching me, and talking about me ... sometimes its weird, but I know they're saying good things so its not so bad.

As for High Five - on Sunday I'm running the Wellington Around the Bays Half Marathon :)

Heal that trap muscle of yours, ATMM (Amazon Tall Mom Mel)!! Plus, I was thinking the same thing about the trash on the road last night. I'm thinking of doing a run/squat combo with a trash bag to clean up the neighborhood. Squarunning? Sure.

Man you are one tough cookie!! I want to have your determination!

Need to put some Hill workouts into my routine.

Observers in diesel trucks are creepy!! I wish they'd go away!

but seriously Mel, I wish I had your will power!!

Have a great day!

I would try rolling on a tennis ball to help your trap. I can't tell you how much I believe in the power of the tennis ball!

Man, those truckers are creepers...was the truck nekkid?
No worries about your training, you are doing great! you need to RELAX! I bet that is where the trapezius muscle is getting all balled up! Last timy my hubby deployed I had so much anxiety and tension I was getting ridiculous headaches at the base of my head, where that muscle connects...as seen in your picture! The PT told me to relax. He gave me some exercises and muscle relaxers. It was so bad that if I turned my head to the left and hold it I would pass out. Talk about bad news! So remember, running should be fun! don't kill yourself! Enjoy it! You are going to get not only your redemption but you BQ!!!

Alicia said...

(M)uscle strains are the worst! Especially the ones that make you go "How the heck did I strain that muscle?!"

(N)oticing the trash alongside the road while running on Tuesday mornings. Irks me, too.

(O)ut of the loop, I am. (<--Yoda speak) I'll be sure to donate to your Breast Cancer cause soon.

I hate creepsters that watch people run/do whatever. People watching is one thing, but staring at someone going by is totally different. Ick ick ick.

And I've got my YouBar giveaway going on this week! http://runkerarun.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/youbar-review-and-giveaway/

M - Maybe you should try ibuprofen instead of tylenol. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, so it'll help you heal faster.

N - Never give up! I love your determination.

O - Observed while running sucks. I hate it. One of those things guys never have to worry about.

I am new to your blog, but here goes:

N: New to your blog

O: On Saturday is New York Road Runners benefit for Haiti. $40 entry goes to Haiti relief. 8,000 runners may turn out, with some big names rumored to be in the field (Deena Kastor).

SO my race plan for Seattle is pretty much non-existent! I persuaded a first-timer to pop her marathon cherry in Seattle so I will probably offer to be her companion if she wants one. But, other than that I really just want to enjoy the course, I will totally be down for group running/FUN. And count me in for carbs + bloggers:)

I'm having crazy trap pain too--though probably not quite as bad as yours. But just when you think you couldn't hurt yourself in another place, running starts to mess with your upper body. That's how it's been for me anyway. Oh well--what are we supposed to do? Stop?

Oh, and my friend is writing a blog about street harassment (which includes being ogled like that). The thing that gets me is how EVERY woman has a story.

Anyway, love your blog! Very colorful ;) Looking forward to reading more, and wishing I'd made it in to the 1,000+++ club.
