Tall Mom 2010 GOALS

Yesterday was all about YOU...AMAZING truly AMAZING!! Welcome to new Bloggy Pack members, lurkers and readers :) Please say Hi!!

The start of 2009 I did not have BIG goals, I was registered for my first Half-Marathon and in the back of my head thought that maybe I could go for a Full Marathon. The Tall Mom blog had not been created and I did not consider myself a RUNNER.

This year I plan to start off with clear Goals and action plans to meet or exceed those Goals. My goals fit into 3 categories, similar to the format of my Test Lab Tuesday. Once these are out there I can't take them back... GULP!!!

LIVING:
  1. One night every week (minimum) we will not watch TV. We will play games as a family, read, build forts, construct and knock down block towers, go for a walk/run, etc. All the focus will be on us being together.
  2. I will define what I "Want to be when I grow-up" and work toward becoming that person in my Big Girl life.
  3. I will read at least 5 books next year, including at least one about running and one about nutrition. I am a painfully slow reader and only have time to read at night when my brain is TIRED so this is a good starting point for me.
  4. I will find ways to reduce my Environmental Footprint first by purchasing a travel mug to give to my barista to fill with my morning JOLT and using my water bottle on car trips and at work instead of plastic bottles.
  5. We will sell our 5 year home and purchase a new Home that will fit us better, hopefully with a yard and closer to work.
EATING:
  1. I will learn more about CLEAN EATING and incorporate more locally grown and fresh products into our daily diets.
  2. Once a month I will find a new recipe (may need your help here food-bloggies), purchase the goods to make the dinner, and cook unassisted for my family. I am not a cook, so this is a BIG goal for me and one that I know will be a huge turning point for me.
  3. Muscle Man and I will reduce intake of alcohol and sweets until mid May in preparation for my Marathon on May 2nd and his first 1/2 Marathon mid May.
  4. I will find ways to curb my appetite and avoid boredom eating. Eating for fuel whenever possible.
  5. All these Eating changes should result in a trimmer waistline and goal weight of 175 on Marathon day in May.
RUNNING:
  1. My running will be less about "ME" and more about "WE." PR's are fine and dandy, but what are they really without someone to share them with? I have always been the Coach type and a Motivator. I TRULY believe that taking the focus off myself and placing it with my partner will make the experiences more enjoyable. Race Plan below. My goal is to run 1,333+++ miles in 2010 with a minimum of 333 miles WITH others.
  2. Work hard and smart through my Fleet Feet MARATHON training cycle to prepare for a Boston Qualifying Effort in the Eugene Marathon on May 2nd. I know I can do this and I REALLY REALLY want to!! I LOVE LOVE Half Marathons, once I Qualify for and run Boston (2011), I plan to take a rest from Marathon focus and hunt down a Half PR.
  3. Race for a sub 21:00 5K. In order to do this I will need to work on my core ab strength, legs and arms. I will lift with Muscle Man minimum of 1 day a week and incorporate abs 3 days a week.
  4. I will Run to raise money for a charity. This year I am going PINK to raise money for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer. Look for fundraising efforts soon..
  5. My attitude toward my weakness HILLS will be a positive attitude. I WILL NOT COMPLAIN about hills. If you catch me complaining about hills email or comment and I will mail you $1.
STRETCH GOALS:
**These are Goals I hope to achieve in the next 5-10 Years
  1. Write and have a book published.
  2. Travel to Ireland and/or Run the Dublin Marathon.
  3. Travel to New York (again) and/or Run the NYC Marathon.
  4. Help Muscle Man to reach his career Goals of either becoming a personal trainer or flipping houses.
  5. Own my own business, in what?? TBD, any ideas?

Tentative Race Schedule:

March 21, 2010- Mercer Island Half Marathon with local Bloggy buddies

May 2, 2010- Eugene Marathon (HERE) BQ Hopes! This race looks amazing. If you are looking for a May Marathon think about it. The Finish Line is on Hayward Field!!!

May 16, 2010- Capital City Half Marathon, running with Muscle Man for his first Half Marathon. My legs will be DEAD after Eugene, so this may be a walk/run :)

June 2010- Race for the Cure Seattle 5K running with Lynette and Charity to help them cross the finish line. Pay if Forward!!

June 26, 2010- Rock 'N' Roll Marathon Seattle running with Shelby for her first Marathon. Bloggy buddy meet ups and hopefully hosting a Seattle carbo load night. Register for Rock 'N' Roll Seattle and let me know so I know how many people to plan for :)

October 10, 2010- Portland Marathon backup in case my Eugene time is not a BQ and running a Marathon on 10-10-10 is too cool to pass up.

*There will be 5Ks, 10Ks, and more, but those I will sign up as I go. I want to make sure the smaller races will fit into my overall training schedule.

There you have it..

Ambitious? Maybe

Possible? Totally

  • What personal goal/resolution for 2010 are you most excited about?

Totally possible!!!

You will achieve your goals, I know it!!! And I cannot wait to follow along in your journey!

I love all your goals. You can reach them all. Can't wait to read about your journey to meet all your goals.

I a sure you will met these goals! I love that they are so well rounded into your life. I will be re-reading this as I journal (off-line) about things I want to me and my family. ~ With our living situation, goals are very hard for me to make public...then they become my focus instead of allowing them to provide me motivation.

Thanks for sharing your journey!

I love that you included "stretch" goals- always great to look ahead!

onebadrunner said...

You can totally do this!

I have found so much encouragement by running for something I believe it - no longer is it about 'me' but about 'we'.

Go get 'em!

Alicia said...

For some reason, I'm more likely to doubt my own goal than yours! You just seem to have that "get 'er done" attitude that will help you sail right through these goals.

Good luck!

awesome goals! good luck. i've got a lot of goals for 2010, but i'm the most excited about running my first 1/2 marathon this year! happy new year :)

it must be said that your family is so beautiful! that aside...my biggest goal right now is to also run the Dublin marathon and somepoint in the next 5 years!

GREAT goals!! I'll join you on that sub 21:00 5k!

And I just wrote out a menu for next week based on eating clean. I'm so excited to do this 100%. I'll be posting sample daily eats since people have asked.

AWESOME goals!! The two resolutions I am most excited for are to focus on speed for shorter distances, and endurance for my longer once ( Boston will come my way someday, but not a focus this year), and to finally pay off ALL of my debt (student loans not counting, LOL, I'm not worrying about that until I graduate!)

Hi Mel,
You have some great goals for this year! I have no doubt that you will most likely achieve all of...I have confidence in you:)

Just let me know when your future book comes out and where to buy it...I want to read it:)

That is a beautiful family picture that you have in your post today....what a good looking family!

TMB said...

Wow! That's a lot to accomplish, yet somehow I think you'll make it happen! Especially that BQ - Piece of Cake!

You should build your own business in Life Coaching ... you are motivating without even realizing it. Imagine what you could do for others if that was your focus!

Here's to an awesome 2010!

ESH said...

GREAT goals! I like the three different categories. You can totally BQ- can't wait to read about it! And count me in for Seattle bloggy fun- I'm pumped to meet some fellow running addicts!

Fran said...

You have a lot of goals but I'm sure you will reach most of them. You really thought them through and I love them.

I'm mostly looking forward to my ambitious goal of running 900K this year (in 2009 it was 427K so I doubled it). A girl has to have goals, doesn't she :)

Have a great year Mel!

Marlene said...

Possible? Definitely! You are focused, driven and determined... you will achieve your goals and I can't wait to watch it unfold. I see a GREAT year ahead!

Great list!! Love the giving back aspect to your goals!!

Great Goals! Love the stretch idea :) I mentioned to my hubby about the no tv a night a week idea.. begrudgingly (a little arm twisting and teeth pulling) he agreed that was a great idea for our family. Thanks for the idea. And god luck this year!

X-Country2 said...

If anyone can knock all that out, it's Tall Mom!

Lisa said...

go make it all happen!

Love the goals!!! I am telling you you will not regret the TV idea we incorporated that last year and we are loving it!!! Feel much closer as a family. You are such an inspiration!!!

Great list Mel! My goal is to run 500 miles and to complete another half marathon (after I complete my first next weekend)!

Velma said...

I love this list - it is just perfect. Maybe we can meet up in Ireland - although I have never been to Oregan and Portland is tempting. Hmmm.

You are such a great planner - maybe you could become an independent wedding planner. I am sure you will find your true road.

Happy 2010!

Wow! I have just begun to look at your blog. It is very fun and impressive. I like that you have goals in many areas, not just running. I especially like your goal of running a certain number of miles with others. I have not finalized my goals yet and you have given me some fresh ideas.

Tricia said...

Totally possible!

(and I've got the Rock 'N Roll San Antonio on my list in Nov)

Staci Dombroski said...

Seriously I LOVE your goals! Especially the one with no tv and game night with the family :-) I have no doubt that you will be able to accomplish all of them!

Meg Runs said...

These goals are all possible with your positive, awesome outlook! Go for it!

Croughwell said...

Good luck with all your goals! I would like to try to BQ too.

Alisa said...

Absolutely POSSIBLE! I will be there with a very LOUD ringing cow bell for you in Eugene.

You can be my coach anytime. I like running with people I know are speedy b/c it totally pushes me since I know they are going slow for me =).

Not sure what I'll be doing on 10-10-2010 but it's likely I'll be in town and spectating the marathon! So you'll have someone there if Eugene isn't your perfect day.

I'm not a cook either, maybe we can help each finding new recipes.

Your running related book will be on it's way soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goals are awesome!!!

MCM Mama said...

Those goals are awesome! I'm so jealous of the cool races you have out there. I'd love to get out there and do a PNW race this year, but we are heading to Alaska and I can't afford to fly out from VA twice in one year.

My goals are still percolating, but I'm most excited about trying to turn one of my loves (running, beer, researching, blogging, etc) into an income generator (even if it's only a very small income).

Great goals -- I love the stretch goals idea too. I've usually called ours pipe dreams but just changing the wording changes the mentality about getting there.
My goals -- give birth (a given) and get back to sub 2H 1/2s.

ChristieisaRunner said...

Hi. I enjoyed reading your blog for the first time. I have the same eating goals. Especially the finding a new recipe. I became a runner in 2009 and ran my first 1/2 marathon. For 2010 I plan to run 3 1/2 marathons and learn to cook :)

Dion said...

I firmly believe YOU will achieve all your goals. Shoot for the stars and you may end up lassoing the moon on the way!

Carly said...

I've been reading for a bit, but haven't been brave enough to comment. I think you're totally inspiring and I love your goals!!! I'm hoping to take on the 1,000 mile challenge this year!

Jo Lynn said...

I can help you with recipes!! I do cook often and I like easy, low-fat/calorie meals. I know, hard to imagine considering all the baking I do too. LOL
OMG, I am a super slow ready as well. Just like you, by the time I climb in bed and open the book, I'm so tired I usually only get a page or two read.

Stacey said...

Great goals! I am excited to read about your experiences this year!

Rookie on the Run said...

Excellent, unselfish goals! I love that!

No TV, family night sounds like one we could incorporate, too. Great idea!

I bet Muscle Man will love to have you cook... I know that the meals I don't have to make always taste better!

I have a feeling you will not be sending anyone a buck for complaining about hills. You are too conscientious for that! :)

Amanda said...

Great goals! It's fun to dream big, but even better when those dreams come true :)

My own personal goal I'm most excited to achieve this year is to finish my weight loss journey. I've lost 62 lbs so far and have 50 to go. Finish line here I come!

Laura said...

Good goals. You're ambitious.

sam said...

I love how you broke down all your goals. They are so well thought out!! I know you will totally dominate them! Can't wait to hear more about the cooking! You'll have to post some pictures of the yummy food you make!!

Happy New Year Mel! Thanks for being such an inspiration!

If anyone can reach these goals its you!! I am most excited about running a sub 2 hour half marathon. I think I will feel like I am a real runner once I do that...I ran Boston and all that jazz but I want to be fast like you! :-) Sounds like a great year!

Amanda said...

Mel, you have some amazing goals and I am excited to cheer you on as you reach them! You can totally accomplish the cooking goal, just check out some food blogs or sites a few times a week, print off what looks good then refer back to them on your cooking days. Good luck!

Awesome goals! My hubby and I really want to go to Ireland too ...
As far as your eating goals go, you mentioned on a more recent post a recipe from Runner's World that's by Mark Bittman, a NY Times food writer. I've started following his blog this past year and tried and liked several of his recipes. They aren't usually too complex and offer fun variations: http://bitten.blogs.nytimes.com/?scp=1&sq=bitten&st=cse
Happy New Year!
