Hi I'm Melanie

Stats for 1/23 (123):
Time- 1:28:12
10- Miles
8:48- Pace
Fastest mile- 8:25 x2
Less fast mile- 9:09
Rainy run in Orting with the Fleet Feet training group.

Woke up sorta late, Little Stud #2 will be 2 next week and still does not sleep through the night. Last night I was testing the tough love approach and did not respond to his "Mama Drink" screams over and over for an hour!! I was tired.

  • Turned on phone, Zoe my NRBF was not feeling well. OK my day to meet some folks in the Fleet Feet training program. As I headed down the hill rain drops hit the windshield, thankfully I had grabbed my Patagonia jacket on the way out. Keeps me dry.
  • Parked, sprinted to change, chatted with my buddy Jess. And before I knew it we were off. I got stuck behind a group and saw a lady up ahead. She was running at a good clip... HMMMM?? I ran to her left... Which running buddy pickup line to use?? "Hi, I'm Melanie. What pace are you running today?" (Yes I am THAT cool) Friendly reply, "Not sure, around 8:45ish." Me "Do you mind if I run with you?" I quickly learned that her name is Tammy, she has 5 kids the oldest is 18, she is an Iron-woman, qualified for and is currently training for Boston. WOW!! I like to ask leading questions to learn as much as I can about people.
  • At mile 2.5 Tammy stopped to get water. I am training with my Golite handheld so I kept on she would "Catch up." As I headed up the only little hill on the trail I noticed a figure to my left. I slowed a little to find a 6'0 tall man, "I have been trying to catch up to your two." Matt, a young looking 40, has run a few marathons and is hoping to get a BQ at Capital City Marathon. He was running about 8:30 pace so I just went with it. Eventually Tammy caught up and we all continued to chatter. They planned to run 11 and 13, I did not want to run more than 10 since I had pushed the pace on Friday. I turned at mile 5 as they SPED on.
  • Alone.. Hmmmm.. I felt a little tired but without my Ipod I sped up to get it over with. No Zoe, no Sam (lazy bird). I passed runners who smiled and waved. Eventually I saw a couple ladies who I remember leading the pack last week. They were about 200 yard away with 2 men, one of the coaches, so I sped up. Started to pass and the coach said "There is the barn burner." The ladies started asking me questions, so I ran BACKWARDS for a few paces. "Are you the one who is trying to qualify for Boston?" "Yes I am HOPING to!" I turned around. More questions, I slowed to talk.
  • Jen and another Tammy, training partners who met at church. Tammy(2) is a Marathon maniac with beautiful red hair, she talked a lot about others, not much about herself. Jen is newer to running (I think?), has 3 kids including 6 year old twin boys and a 3 year old girl with curly blond hair named Molly. They let me crash their party for 3 miles and the time passed quickly. Ended at the park with my friend Jessica and her training partners. Realized I had lost one of my LUCKY runner earrings. SAD!!!
  • My legs felt AMAZING!! This run reinforced the fact that I can and should run just under 9 minute mile pace. My legs are more sore when I force myself to slow. Another WONDERFUL long run done.
  • How was your Saturday?
  • Have you ever met a new friend while running?

Nice to run and chat.. I missed my running pal this weekend, but it meant I got a 10 miler in yesterday too.
Looking forward to cheering for the 1000 milers who might be a little short this month!

I ran with my running friend I run on weekends with. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her but she doesn't like to race. I have met a few people through running but I am not good at small talk and tend to stay in background. I will try to be inspired by your ease at meeting people!

Hey, that's almost a half marathon!

I run alone - just me and the squirrels.

I make all kinds of friends on Half Marathons, but I've never actually made it to the "exchange phone numbers" part of the date...

Today (Sunday) was awesome because I was able to RUN! YES, RUN! How about that? After exactly 2 months and 10 days of "injury", I am a runner again.

~sniff~ I might cry.

I love how confident you are about meeting new people...I wish I was able to do that. I run by myself most of the time, but would love to have running partners. I have thought about approaching other runners while out on my runs, but I always chicken out! The next time I'm out I'll remember your post and try to make a new running friend! :)

oh mama, I'm with you. 3 year old sleeps through the night 85% of the time, and 1 year old more like 25% of the time. I keep telling myself in 10 years I will be screaming at them to GET OUT OF BED IT'S AFTERNOON ALREADY!! haha!

Wow that sounds like so much fun! I love meeting new people when I run, it is always a tad bit awkward deciding which "pick up" line to use! I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove to chat while running! I'll talk to anyone who's willing to talk back and have a convo. It makes the time go by faster and you get to make new friends! Great job Mel, I'm really looking forward to meeting you in April 2011!

So bummed that I didn't feel well to run in the early AM. But I Love Love LOVE your running buddy pick up line! :) Next week, it's back on!

Great pace, great job!

Sounds like a great run. Running w/ a group is really the best. I have a wonderful pack of about 15 ladies that I run w/ two to three times/week. Met them all through our local running club. I am spoiled! We did 16 yesterday and it felt great.

I have never met someone during a run, but I became friends with pretty much all of my friends because of running. It definitely brought us together. Keep up the speedy running! You are going to rock!

I'm all kinds of jealous of your speed. I can push on a treadmill but not in the "real" world. Maybe someday :)
Last June I met my friend Karen at the Beach to Chowder run at Long Beach, WA. She was running her first 5K and I was running the 10K. She asked me to take her pic. We Facebooked each other and have kept in touch since then. I look forward to chatting with her again this June.

I feel you pain on the not sleeping through the nights yet. (But we are only 17 months, and I hope the end is near!)

Your run sounded great. I just love the idea of a running club. We are way too small town.

Congrats on Casey virtual race!

Thanks for the GU. It came yesterday and I'll have one next Saturday.

I have met a friend while running but I haven't seen him in a while. I was actually on my bike (injured) and every morning I would pass this guy running. One morning I turned and rode with him while he ran. I did that a couple times and when I got to running, I would run my course the opposite direction so I'd run into him.

I like to make friends while running. I never know what to say, though to strike up a conversation with someone or to ask to run with them. On another note, my little will be two in April and she still doesn't sleep through the night well. Even though she wakes frequently, she, most of the time, will go back to sleep quickly with just a tuck in and back pat. But it's still aggrivating b/c my oldest slept through the night so early and never looked back.

Awesome post! Love that you meet so many people while running. Just seems to fit you. :)

I'm amazed that you can hold long conversations while running - I am lucky to hold up a hand and wave since I am huffing and puffing away! Great post!

I usually meet people who are walking - it is a nice way to meet the neighbors!

Sorry about the earring. Awesome pace!

You rock, Speedy! Way to go!

I haven't met a friend running, yet. I am excited to run with some Team in Training people starting soon, though. Yay running friends!

I have a bunch of running friends, but because of the hubby's job and my kid's activities, I rarely get to actually run with them these days. Running with others does make the miles fly buy, doesn't it!

I love that you're out there meeting new people on the run. What a great way to get to know some new running buddies!

My Saturday was low-key, which was awesome! Slept in, went for a 10K run solo (dropped hubs off at the gym on the way and picked him up on the way back). Then we stayed hom, watched some TV and movies and made dinner.

Sounds like an awesome run and an awesome training group. I met a friend running two different races and ended up running with them the whole race. Isn't that so cool?!?!

Looks like you had a successful running weekend! Great job - BTW, I love you're internal dialogue! Mine is often along the same lines of craziness. Glad to see I'm not alone :)

Is it wrong for me to say that I'm glad my 2-yr-old is not the only one who won't sleep through the night? Not that I don't want you to sleep, but I really thought I was doing something wrong!
Great job, speedy!

Longer runs are far more bearable when you get to chat with people for any part of it! Puts me in a good mood all over again and is guaranteed to last for miles after routes separate or whatev. Good luck with the BQ chase! It's there! You can do it! Hope to join the quest this fall... stress fracture recovery this winter.

Nice job on the run and meeting other runners!

I've never met anyone while running. I tend to be a solo runner. But I am toying with hooking up with a local running group this weekend. After reading about your experience, I just may have to force myself to run with others!

Nice to find new people to run and talk with. I found so many great runner friends while I was training to half marathon.

Ok I don't mean to be debbie downer, but I have to say something because this picture has really bothered me since I first saw it. I think as runners it's our responsiblity to teach others about responsible non-dstracted driving to keep us all safe on the roads.

ok sorry...but it was really buggin me
