i like their website. very minimalistic. not inundated with ads for random stuff. as for their prodcuts i would love to try the strawberry banana.

Genesis said...

i have never had a Gu. they dont sell that around here even in our sports stores. nutritional running stuff...well i take the energy blocks made by Powerade (not sure), and im just starting to try coconut water.

After looking around the GU website I found a link to employment options. Although they currently dont have anything that I could even do, I think it would be fun to work for a company like that!

J said...

I have not used GU at all for any training or races. Guess I need to get on that. Since I am not doing longer runs I havent been needing to fuel up.

J said...

Ok so heres your funny story (kind of embarrassing for me but oh well).

Its monday morning (aka this morning) and I am at the gym. I run on the treadmill, I hit up the stair climber. By the end I am dripping with sweat. I head into the locker room and get out my stuff to shower. I get my shampoo and condition and body wash. I take out my shower shoes and then head into the shower. The water was hot right away so I strip down and get into the shower. Mid shampoo I realize i forgot my towel in my locker...yeah. My brian was totally out of it. So i finished showering and then put my workout shirt back on with my shorts and walked back to my locker to dry off with my towel. I didnt really feel like walking around naked this morning...it was bad.

Ok so as you know, my bday is March 3rd and My anniversary with Brian (this year will be two years) is on March 15th.

I'd Love to fill your calendar. As long as I can add more later b/c so far I'm only set on 2 races: 2/28 Hyannis Marathon and 5/2 New Jersey Marathon.

Still thinking about the rest!

last year we used to live in the university apartments that was situated at the top of a small hill. the parking lot was pretty steep because of the hill. in order to get down to the main road we needed to cross the parking lot.

one morning Ian and I were walking to the bus stop and the snow was coming down hard and there was a weeks worth of built up snow on the lot. we were taking our time going down the hill because of the slick ice. Ian turns to me and says, "dont hold on to me because i dont want you to take me down if you fall down". a second after he said that he started to slip and grabbed on to me for support, and took me down with him.

To make matters worse is that we lived on the main road so EVERYONE saw us take a spill. and just as we fell, a runner passed by and just busted out laughing! i dont blame her, it was pretty funny. We actually slid down the lot pretty close to the sidewalk and main road.

i liked that the site actually features athletes, rather than just pushed their products.

i've never used Go for runs, since I'm stil a super short distance runner type person. but, while i am running in the frigid dry air of southern illinois, i make sure to have some Burts Bees Lip Balm and my my husband along side carrying water for me! (hey, he helps with hydrating me, encouraging me, and telling me i have a cute bum... he's almost a necessity on runs) =)

I enjoy the GU website mostly because I enjoy their products and COOL FLAVORS! I am all about flavor! Who knew Roctane came in pineapple? Not I until today!

Filling the Tall Mom calendar:

Boston Marathon: 4/19
Chicago Marathon: 10/10/10 (all those 10's must be good for something right?)
NYC marathon (lottery willing) 11/7?
And of course my bday: 12/17

Entry #2...hehehehe...I need me some gu!
I just checked out their website and saw that they are a local company for me. They are based out of Berekeley. I was really hoping to see that they are made right here in the US too, but that information isn't on the website and that made me a bit suspicious. If you talk to your Gu rep, can you ask me where they are actually made?

Finally, entry #3!
Every year, without fail, my mom tells this story of when I was five years old.
We lived in a two story house at the time and when you came down the stairs it was right into the living room. Well, Chrismas morning was always a big deal. My brother and I would wait at the top of the stiars while my parents went down stairs, turned the tree lights on, poured themselves a cup of coffee and ooed and awed for a few mins while we waited in anticipation! The torture!
Well that year, I came down the stairs and started crying right away! I burst out into tears because I didn't see any presents from Santa for me. I got to the bottom of the stairs and was crying that "I sware I was a good girl! How did he know I bit Michael (my brother) last night? That was the only thing!" My parents laughed their butts off! I had confessed to something I hadn't needed to! The problem was that Santa had put all my presents on the other side of the tree, a place you couldn't see when you came down the stairs! I had indeed got everything I had asked for and then I also got a talking to for the confession I had made. I don't remember this at all, I do remember the Barbie limo I got but not the tears or confession. My mom tells this story EVERY YEAR MULTIPILE TIMES!
The moral of the story, your kids aren't going to remember it all! Thanks again Mel!!!

And here's how I GU during a marathon:

I have my first one w/water of course, at mile 5.
then miles 10, 15 or every 45 mins, whichever comes first.
After mile 15 all GU guidelines fly out the window and I become a wild GU consuming machine, slugging/swilling/chewing/whathaveyou at my whim...whatever it takes to keep me upright and progressing forward, hopefully at some semblance of a desireable pace.

I hav enever used gu before... it is on my list to try this year as I flirt with the idea of my first half. They longest I have ever run before was 8 miles and I was running out of steam towards the end. My friend swears I needed gu.

I have never tried Gu. Part of me is really afraid that I won't be able to stomach the consistancy ... but if I was to win some, I would definitely give it a go!

Currently, I use Clif Bloks, which I have heard are very similar to Chomps. I do runs of 10+ with Gatorade and Clif Bloks.

My story is about my favorite winter race. It was last year on New Year's Day. I was 35 weeks pregnant and crazy HUGE! Totally against the hubby's wishes, I ran our local New Year's Day 10K. It was freezing and hilly and members of my running team were hungover from the night before. But we were debuting our new team uniform ... cheetah skirts, and there was no way I was going to miss it (even if I barely fit into mine). The odds were stacked against me, but somehow I finished. And that afternoon I paid the price. I was beyond sore. My legs hurt. My butt hurt. Even my biceps hurt. But none of that mattered, I finished (in 1:04:51). And I actually beat 37 people. 37 people who are probably really embarrassed that a 35 week pregnant woman crossed that line first. It was my most glorious "pregnancy running" moment.

My story is about a black out and about my brother in law, Keith, and his now wife, Vera.
It was the black, out of 2003 and NYC (and the rest of the east coast) was at a stand still. The trains were down, the traffic lights were off and my favorite- the gates at the tolls were being lifted by hand.
My brother in law Keith is on a bus trying to get from midtown to Staten Island (painful on a good day). As he tells it he got on the bus and saw a "vision of beauty" reading the paper and knew he had to talk to her. According to her "here comes some loud mouth class clown." Keith is the life of the party- ALWAYS so he has the bus laughing and joking and makes the 12 hour commute bareable. And even engaging Vera in some conversation.
Some time during the bus ride, Keith askes to read the paper Vera had finished reading. As Vera gets off the bus, Keith stands and says "Miss, here is your paper" she says "I'm done with it I don't need it"
Keith responds, "I wrote my number on the front page, I have really enjoyed talking to you, I'd like to do it again"
They were married this summer

Such wonderful giveaways! You are da bomb!

When I was running longer distances, I liked to take a gu every 5 miles or so. But, I also love using gu for triathlon training ... two per sprint distance... one a half hour before the race, and then one with a few miles left of the bike... just enough to get me through the 5k!

I don't think I've commented on here before but I am an avid runner, just finishing the NYC marathon in November which was AMAZING! Big life event=moving to Seattle from Memphis January 21...holla! Funny Gu story...I ran the Wichita marathon this October with my friend and we were both dressed up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and our babies at the finish line were a flying monkey and a munchkin. We totally forgot to get Gu before the race and all Walmart had was candy. There were only 250 runners so needless to say they did not pass out any Gu during the race. Just for future reference...candy is not an adequate replacement for Gu...

Generally it isn't super cold in Phoenix. We don't get the rain/snow like others do. On this particular winter day it was cold for Phoenix standards and I had a long run. I wore my tights, long sleeve shirt and gloves and was still pretty cold. I put on my water belt and headed out the door in the dark. A number of miles into the run I realize that my butt is still really cold; it hasn't warmed up at all. Matter of fact, I'm really still cold. I reach back and find my entire back side is wet because I didn't close one of my water bottles and I've been leaking water for miles. It was a long, cold, wet run.

Here's my holiday weather story: My mom and youngest sister were visiting for Thanksgiving in...2006, I think. Anyway, we were watching the Seahawks on MNF before we were to leave for the airport (so they could go home to CA). It started snowing at the game and we were all like, "Hey, it's snowing, cool." It wasn't snowing in Maple Valley. An hour later, we drive in to Renton (in my Minivan) to get to the freeway and it was white out conditions! We managed to get on the freeway and there we crawled for two hours! My mom kept calling the airport and they hadn't cancelled her flight even though Highway 518 (the one that goes from Tukwila to SeaTac) was closed because of a huge pileup. Finally, she changed her flight and then they cancelled it like 30 minutes later. Lame! Anyway, after a couple hours we got to an off ramp in Tukwila and I decided to get off the freeway and to go back the way we came on the side streets instead (Grady Way). BAD IDEA. TWO MORE HOURS later, I'm finally at the next freeway on ramp and I have to speed up it but people aren't leaving enough room and are spinning out (including a bus). We manage to get up and it takes another hour, hour and a half, to get back to Maple Valley. It was almost midnight! It took us about 5 and a half hours to go about 30 miles!

Kerrie T. said...

I've never used Gu. Normally, I eat peanut butter on toast before all of my runs. I've only tried Honey Stingers and Sport Beans, so I need to try Gu!

entry one.

went to the gu website after seeing so many comments about undiscovered flavors of gu-ness, and sure enough, there are cranberry apple gu chomps--i had no idea! however, chocolate mint gu....ummm, wow, i'd have a difficult time saving that for running and would probably be found downing packets sitting at my work desk. self control is my, errr, middle name.

Faith Ann said...

Oh my gosh, those holiday flavours look amazing! I wish my local running store carried them although they're probably not available in Canada :(

I went to their website to see if there were other flavours that I hadn't heard of.

During my marathon training and the actual marathon, I took a GU (chocolate outrage every time) every 4-5 miles depending on the day.

rachel said...

entry two. i am the most unhealthy long distance runner in the greater chicago area...or close. i don't hydrate at all unless a run is over 13 miles (gasp! i know!) and don't usually use gu until it's around 20. i always, ALWAYS carry 3 gel packs with me on a marathon and use the first at the half and the second and third around miles 19 and 23....i've also found that gu is amazing for the high impact cross training i do on low mileage or non running days, so i'll have one before the workout and it makes a gigormous difference!

Faith Ann said...

I'm a Canadian runner who hates running on ice and snow, I'm afraid I don't have any great winter stories because I tend to hibernate on my treadmill for the winter to avoid breaking my neck outside. My streets are *treacherous* already.

Last winter, I ran my first half marathon in February... but my husband and I flew to Tallahassee so we wouldn't have to worry about running through a blizzard. A storm did affect our flights on the way home however and it took us 24 hours longer than expected to get home.

I used the mint chocolate one and I was practically licking the package after!!! I posted about it! I loved it! I am looking forward to this week's long run so I can try another flavor!

Erin said...

I was just checking out the Gu website and now I really want to try their recovery brew. I bet it would be perfect after a long run since I tend to lose my appetite for a few hours.

Erin said...

I have never actually had a Gu. Can you believe it?! I started using gels when training for the NYC marathon in 2007, but I used them pretty infrequently (wasn't too familiar with the whole running nutrition idea). I only used the free gels that I had received at other races and they were all PowerBar brand. I've stuck with that ever since because I keep getting free ones at races. Yes, I'm kinda cheap like that.

My cold weather story comes from way back in the 80’s. My mom had taken me, my brother, and my sister to Vermont to go skiing at Bromley. One night my mom had had enough of 3 young kids in a small ski condo, and we went out to dinner. It was a little foggy when we left, but nothing too severe. By the time we left the restaurant, the fog had really rolled in and was so thick and white that my mom was terrified of driving. We made it about halfway back to the condo before my mom’s visibility was down to about 3 feet in front of her. She could barely make out the lines on the road! She solved the problem by making my brother (who was about 11) hang his head out of the passenger side window so he could see the white line and tell her which way the road was curving. At 5mph, the 15 minute ride into town suddenly became about 90 minutes. This is one of my strongest childhood memories: my mother freaking out and gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles, screeching at my poor brother who is doing his best to guide her even though he can barely see the road. Of course my little sister and I were oblivious to this all and just enjoying the magic of the fog.

this is the first december since 2005 that i've lived in a place with real, actual winters...ones that involve snow and ice instead of palm trees and sunsets over the caribbean in 85 degree christmases (why oh why did i ever move back to the states?! oh yes, because even if i was lucky enough to win, you wouldn't be paying the shipping to get it down there!). i thought i was prepared for the brutal chicago weather. i was certain of it. compression top? check. layers of tights and yoga pants and even more pants upon pants? check. gloves that make it impossible to even shut the front door behind me? check. however, i failed to realize that the wonderful little river trail i spent all summer running would be covered in a sheet of impenetrable ice. sunday i spent 10 miles running alongside said trail on the sloped grass through several inches of snow; it pretty much equated to running on a sandy beach front (caribbean reference? double check.), which is just not great for the knees or for the stamina. i made it home, weary and frustrated, because the options for long runs are slim. drive to the lake or to the suburbs or risk being plowed by, well, an actual snow plow running in the street. the happy ending? i found a set of strap on ice footings, which were a perfect solution to my dilemma. today i ran 4 miles through northern chicago, leaping and bounding on the ice as passerbys stared in awe. (yes, AWE...not in humor or laughter or embarassment for the blonde prancing on city sidewalks in 20 degree weather...err...riiiight...) i didn't trip or slide or get discouraged at all; so a happy winter of running and a merry gu-mas to all!

Ways that I GU :) Depending on the length of the race sometimes I take one before. My system can't always handle a lot so I go for 1 about halfway through a run, preferably with water. On a half or full marathon I'll take them whenever they are offered. Usually 2-3. So far orange is the only flavor I've tried with adverse affects.

I enjoyed looking around the website (found some new products to try), but was bummed that they don't seem to have any races local to me.

Great minds think alike...I have a very very very similar giveaway coming up...saving it for Christmas!!!

MCM Mama said...

I love Gu. It's the only gel/chomp that I can eat with out digestive system issues. I use it about every 5 miles on long runs and I eat one before my runs after I take my kiddo to preschool. It gives me the perfect amount of energy when it's been two hours since breakfast and doesn't sit in my stomach like real food seems to.

Tricia said...

Great giveaway, thank you Gu!

Tricia said...

I'm a newbie so I havent tried their stuff yet, hopefully this will give me the opportunity.

My race calendar is really squishy right now. The only race I've actually signed up for is the Pacer's half marathon on May 23rd.

Next year is a big year for me though. I'll have been married to Beer Geek for 15 years on May 13th and I turn 40 (ack!) on August 25th.

My will be running the Jonathan Dickinson 10K on Jan. 9th. It will be my first 10K :)

Growing up in Texas and now living in Florida I don't have a lot of "snow memories", but one year will always stick in my mind. We were staying at my grandparents for Christmas. All of us "kids" were grown up and in our early 20s. My sister woke me up at 3am to tell me it was snowing. What?!?! Snowing in Houston? It was too exciting to pass up. So me and my two sisters bundled up and headed out. We had snowball fights, made snow angels and snowmen. It was 3 am and we woke most of the neighborhood with our shouts of glee. My grandmother just shook her head at us "crazy kids". It was our only White Chritmas and truly one to remember.

3.It was my brothers first year in college, so my Dad decided we would take a cruise for Christmas, so we could all spend some quality time together. We got on the ship, and the first night when we sat down for dinner the plates were literally moving back and forth on our table because the ship was rocking so bad. We all skipped dinner to lay in our rooms and prayed the dramamine would kick in. Every day was that bad!! Fast forward to later that week. We had docked in Mexico, we enjoyed LAND! Then it was time to get back on our ship, we got on the little boat that takes you over to the ship, and we waited for about 1 hour. Next thing we know our ship is backing up, and leaving us! Us, and 50 other passangers had to spend the night in Mexico, with only one crew member from the ship who spoke no Spanish, and was dressed like a pirate, with no change of clothing. The next day we took a bus 4 hours to some remote beach area to get on a small boat to take us to Cozumel. The waves were awful, the boat almost flipped over a couple of times. They went down the isles handing out barf bags and people were definitely using them. We finally got to Cozumel, and were glad the rest of the trip was smooth sailing. But that was a vacation we will never forget. And my Dad got his wish we had all really bonded.

4.I have a the museum of aviation half on Jan 16th. The Disney Princess half on March 7th. That is all that is on my schedule so far.

5. No one reads my blog, so that did not seem as though it would create enough advertisement. So I plan on running around town with a sign attached to my back to let people know. Picture to follow soon!

Don't recall ever trying Gu, although I use similar products from other companies. I am interested to try their "Gu Brew" though.

Jesse said...

On my training runs (and races) I use Hammer Gels, largely because they advertise as being vegan and then I don't have to sort through the ingredient list. That, and they sit well in my stomach. I generally 'gel' every 5 miles or so on runs that are 15 miles or longer.

My holiday story is from Christmas 1999, which was my first time being away from home for the holidays. I was living on board a non-profit hospital ship that was docked at port in Manila, Philippines. Despite the cockroaches that crawled onto our beds (I quickly learned that surrounding my bed with masking tape, sticky side out, solved that problem), it was definitely one of my most memorable holiday seasons.

Most of the crew had left the ship for the holidays, leaving about 20 of us on board. We didn't exchange gifts, or anything like that. We simply enjoyed time with each other in the galley (dining room). I got to know one of the local guys quite well during that time, and we have remained in contact ever since. He was literally born and raised on a garbage dump, and seeing his amazing outlook on life, despite the cards he's been dealt, is one of the most impacting gifts I've ever received.

I agree with others in that the look of the website is nice---not too offensive to the eye. I do think that they should include a section for newbies on how to Gu...a lot of beginner runners don't know how to properly take gels, or even what gels are.

Frayed Laces said...

On runs over 12 miles, I take a gel every 7-8 miles. When I first started with gels, I needed them every 5 miles or so.

Oh I have a great power outage story!
I have a good friend who does my hair for me. I wanted to get my hair darkened a bit and she was booked. So I went somewhere else. (big NO-NO) I didn't like the color they did at all! So in a panic I called my friend and she said she could squeeze me in. They made it so dark that she had to strip the color out to fix it. As soon as I sat under the dryer with all those chemicals in my hair, the power went out. A 50ft oak tree had fallen right in front of her house and knocked out the main transformer! Apparently the heat of the dryer is important and we didn't know how long the power would be out,so she rinsed the stuff out of my hair. My hair was yellow! Literally the color of butter!! It stayed that way for 2 DAYS! They finally fixed the transformer and I was able to get my hair fixed...but I think it was a sign the I am supposed to be a blond!

Here's my holiday story:

There is a large age jump between my sister, brother and me and our youngest brother. Growing up, we were threatened over and over again that if we told him Santa didn't exist, we wouldn't get any presents. With the threat of coal looming, we obediently complied with my parent's warnings. That Christmas morning, everything was going perfectly. My younger brother was opening gift after gift from Santa. We opened gifts that we knew were from Mom and Dad, but played along with the Santa routine. Everything proceeded as planned, until one of the last presents were opened. It was a necklace to my Mom from Santa. My Mom opened it, all teary eyed, and made the mistake of mouthing "thank you" to my Dad when she thought my younger bro wasn't watching.
Well, if you grow up the youngest of 4 kids, you learn to keep your wits about you. My brother noticed the look and exclaimed "I know what is going on!" He ran up to my mom and whispered something in her ear. It wasn't until a few years later that we learned what he said:

"I know that you and Daddy are Santa, but don't tell the others, because I don't want them to be sad."

It's been awhile since I used Gu because my long runs? Haven't been so long. The last time I used it was over a year ago when I was training/running a half marathon. There are more half marathon plans for 2010, so I'm sure I'll be stocking up on some Gu soon!

Badgergirl's 2010 calendar:

Jan. 23 - YMCA indoor triathlon
Jan. 24 - I turn the big 3-0.
May 16 - Green Bay Half Marathon
June 19 - High Cliff Sprint Triathlon
Aug. 8 - Oshkosh Triathlon
Sept. 19 - Fox Cities Half Marathon

And a few 5Ks scattered throughout the year.

I've got Christmas cutout cookie making mastered. Each year, the weekend before Christmas my mom, two aunts and I get together to make a huge batch of cutout cookies. So big we triple the recipe. One year we quadrupled it. Needed an extra bowl to mix the dough in. Anyway. When you look at the recipe, you see things like 6 teaspoons of vanilla or 6 cups of sugar. But when it comes to shortening? We measure in canisters. After a few years of measuring it out in cups (and measuring shortening can get a bit messy), we realized that 6 cups? It's the entire 48 ounce canister. So now we just dump the entire canister in. No measuring needed. This year's effort? We ended up with 37 dozen cookies (444 cookies). And since we've got this assembly line process down, we were able to finish mixing, cutting, baking and cleaning in three hours. Not bad.

I sort-of Gu for my runs...thus far I've mostly used Gu Chomps instead of the regular Gu. Generally if I'm doing more than 9 miles, I open up a pack of Gu Chomps around mile 6 and work my way through it for the next hour.

If I'm running with a partner, I bring two packs so I can offer Gu Chomps as bribes to keep my partner going ;)

My calendar for 2010 so far is pretty bare - I'm definitely doing the Kaiser Half Marathon in San Francisco on Feb 7. I'm going to try to make my first marathon (eek!) be the Eugene Marathon on May 2.

Oops website - I like how they have the different flavors all listed - that's some of the most important info!

my fueling - Gu every 4 miles on runs over 8 miles, with plain water. Roctane if it's a race or I have a ton from work (like right now!)

I don't think I'll have a winning story - but my holiday race season has been filled with helping people who want to do their first half or full at RNRAZ. I had in a group of college girls last week who had run up to 2 miles and were planning on a sub 3:30 at the marathon in a month..... right.

OOH! I found out about your "Gu-away" from G at Neurosis of the Stay At Home Mom. I'm uber bummed that I did not know about the Vanilla Gingerbread flavor from Gu. I went to the Gu website to check around, and was toying with buying some online. Check this out -- it's supposed to be $8.10 for a 6-pack, but when you go to add to cart, it shows up as $7.50 ? Ummmm -- someone's got some bad math going on there.
