Not What I wanted to See

I have been a little nervous to step on the scale....with the holidays, travelling and not getting in high calories work-outs. This morning I stepped on the scale.. FAIL!!! I am up 7 pounds. WHAT DID I DO?

I let myself fluctuate, I like to be 185 or less, at 6'0 tall that puts me right at the top of the "Healthy" BMI range. As long I am 189 or less I feel OK. But this morning a big 192 slapped me in the face.

FAILS:

-Portion Control- I went back for seconds on the tasty Turkey Dinner.

-Fruit Juices- I usually avoid high calorie drinks and stick to water, this week I was not so focused and consumed many calories in my cup.

-Starbucks- With a Coffee addiction it is easy to get a 400 calories cup of jolt and consume it in minutes while at the Mall. Which is what I did. Repeat after me "Tall, Non-Fat, No Whip." UGH!!

-Pie- I had 3 pieces of pie, enough said.

-Snacks- We were in the car a lot and it is easy to snack on crackers, Cheetos, etc. I was eating out of boredom.

***So I know what I did to EARN those pounds..

TO GET BACK DOWN:

I wrote a post ages ago about how I lost weight and have been able to maintain HERE.. I will use the same strategies that helped me before. Lots of running. Fruits and Veggies. Water. No frilly coffee drinks until I am back down. No Desserts. 100 Calorie=1 Mile mentality.

So there you have it, I admit it I splurged, which is OK. But I will not let those 7 pounds become more. I have a plan! Will let you know how it goes.

How did you all do?

Will you be working off your food this week too??

the holidays are notorious to packing on the pounds, and as you said, being a busy mom, it's tough not to get caught up on the snacking in the car! between my swimming, Terron's swimming, his karate, etc etc etc, to many meals on the go... hang in there, you look good, feel good, that's what's important.

It is entirely too easy to put on pounds during the holidays. You'll get back down..the Starbucks drinks and snacking in the car are easy culprits. As for me, I'm just trying to maintain w/o dropping more weight (I wouldn't mind being 5# lighter bu not right now). The problem is I'm having a hard time keeping my weight level.

I won't weigh myself until tomorrow. I ate two desserts each on Thursday and Friday and most of a cheese platter on Friday, so yesterday and today I've been really hitting the veggies, fruit, and water. I'm hoping that by tomorrow I'll be back to the "fluffy" weight I was at before the holiday and then I can focus on getting back where I like to be. At only 5'3" it doesn't take much gain to make all my clothes uncomfortable.

Good luck with getting things back under control. I'm sure you'll be back to normal soon!

I weigh in on Wednesdays so I still have a few days to see the damage.

I too, ate lots of pie. UGH! I usually have the mentality that I can eat what I want on Thanksgiving and on Xmas but the days in between I have to eat smart.

I'd really like to lose some lbs before I start my half iron training in February, I'll have to go back and read your weightloss post.

my gym is having a contest about maintaining your weight. you get a team of 3 and we weighed in before thanksgiving, we will weigh in again after NYE and see who maintains the best OR loses. it is a great motivation.

I did okay over the holidays. I felt like I had what I wanted, but I still feel a little deprived. As a result, I have been SO hungry since Thanksgiving Day. I hate it when I feel full, but my taste buds are telling me that I am hungry. It's all a mind game with me. I am winning the mind game right now, but sometimes I get tired of playing!!!

It's okay to gain a bit after all it has been Thanksgiving.

I'm still in my weight loss process. I've had a rough week last week but am determined to make next week a good week.

We don't have Thanksgiving so no worries for me till Christmas on that point.

I'm up four pounds and really ticked off about it. I did it to myself, I just stopped watching my calorie intake as close as usual. I'm still running and I know some of that is my fat going to muscle cause oh mi gosh I can run two miles without stopping now. I've never run that far in my life.

BOOOoooooo HISS. and you know what, reading your list i'm just like... gosh that is all just normal life! fruit juice and starbucks coffees and snacks... it sucks that we feel like we have to be such hawks in order to keep our weight down. i am running into the same thing b/c i'm already a healthy weight but i want to be slimmer to be faster and so i have to be basically PERFECT with my eating (hasn't been going so well, lol). since being sick i've actually slowed down/calmed down enough to sleep and rest and i'm eating the best i ever have. i actually always do really well over holidays for some reason because i'm not a social eater, i eat when i'm bored.

you sound super determined-- you got it in the bag.

Girl, don't worry! You'll be fine, but I hear you. Your eating has mirrored mine. I'm so relieved that the pecan pie is gone. :)
You'll kick butt!!
The coffee's are SO easy to add up calories. I usually get skinny vanilla lattes and have been splurging on the pumpkin spice, etc. Need to get control!

I am going to focus on fruits and veggies also, and some more running. :)

The kids and I went out to eat on Thanksgiving and we shared just one plate. So not splurging or leftovers. My weight stayed about the same.

Hey Mel - Ive got all the ppl who signed up for the CCGE in an excel file. I looked up everyones locations and left comments on the blogs i couldn't find the info. I'll post about the exchange tomorrow again and then start doing the random pairings tomorrow night. I think I am ok for now but will keep you posted as always!!!

Oh yeah...I weighed myself this morning, and didn't see a weight gain, BUT I usually don't see it for a couple of days (weird, but how it works for me). I suspect that tomorrow, I'll see it.

((sigh))

Even with 2 long runs in 4 days I am up about 2 - 3 pounds. I will be cutting back on the big holiday breakfasts!! More salads for lunch and smaller dinners. Of course, water water water. Oh the holidays! I like the thought of 100 calories - 1 mile. I will remember that.

TMB said...

oh I feel you ... with this foot injury, no running and lots of holiday food, I am so scared to get on the scale ... Hope your plan works!

Ugh! You will be fine! Thank goodness you have a plan! Not gaining weight is the ONLY reason I like doing the Seattle Half! I think I burned off that piece of pumpkin pie I ate yesterday! I plan to either give the rest of my pie to my mother-in-law (who needs the calories, lucky) or trashing it. Hmm......

You will shed those pounds! I know you will!!! You have some serous determination!!! Get back on track!

Oh yeah, and I am down one pound from Thursday! What's up with that!!! :)

I have pretty much maintained the same weight for the last several months, but I am in the same mentality as you right now. There are 5 lbs of baby weight still on me and then another 10 lbs I would like to lose to feel good about my weight. So I am mentally telling myself the same thing: fruits, veggies, no extra sweets. I relinquished the juices 6 years ago while I was pregnant with my first child and I tested borderline positive for gestational diabetes diabetes. Got rid of the juices and then I was fine. Never went back to drinking juice and I am not a big fan of the carbonated drinks. So for me it is usually water or water with those little Crystal light packets...diluted. Good luck with the weight loss...I will be right there with you!!

I appreciate the honesty. I eat a lot out of boredom when I travel. You will be back on track asap!

Hey Mel,

Great post! Thankfully (no pun intended), I didn't gain any weight this past week, buuuutttt.... weight HAS been on my mind a lot lately for another reason: have gained 4 pounds since I began 'really' training back in August. What's up w/ that??

Well, with a little soul searching, it's pretty clear - calories in/calories out. Even though I've increased my calories out dramatically, I've also "compensated" w/ more little 'extras' during the day 'because I'm running' - what a load of c-r-a-p, Robin! Get off the Excuses Train, and get focused! So I've been working on a post about portion control and revisiting the info we talk about over at my foodie blog-to keep me accountable. Goal: 10 pounds off by the Disney Princess 1/2 in early March. We'll see how that works out....! As a diabetic, I eat very little unhealthy food, but (apparently) I eat more than enough of something that needs to be decreased!

Re: the t-shirt over at the turtles blog, I've been working on a few designs of my own lately... more info (and pics) coming soon! :-)

BTW- Hubby and I are dying to know: why NOT a red stroller???

Hugs from Orlando,
r.

I was so scared to weigh myself today too! I didn't do too badly this year. I'm right where I've been. My exercise routine didn't change though, and I'm sure that's why I didn't gain. Now I just have to get through the next 6 weeks! Should be fun...

Lisa said...

Ugh, I totally know how you feel. After the marathon and my injury, I have not been able to workout like I did during training but my hunger level seemed to be the same! I have definitely gained a few pounds over the last month and can feel it. I am also trying to reign myself in and get things under control. Thankgoodness I am able to pick up the cardio a bit more, but still no running. Hopefully soon I will start to shed the lbs. It's not really about the number on the scale, but how I FEEL. It sounds like the same goes for you.

Good luck! I know you'll be able to do it! (and we're here to help!)

I've switched to the dark side of dairy in my coffee (mmmmm.....cream....). Thanks for the reminder that it's NOT a good idea. And no worries, it will come off.

It sounds like we had similar Thanksgiving weeks!! I too, will be getting the pounds off in the next few weeks.

That's the downside of the holidays, unfortunately! But you are so positive about it and are taking the right steps to work on it...you'll get those undesirable pounds off in no time!

Catey said...

Meh-it happens! We all know it happens, it happens to almost all of us, and my thinking is that as long as you are willing to work it off (and are aware of what it takes), then no biggie! I usually tack on a good 5-7 during Nov and Dec, knowing that the extra treats mean extra work. Those Christmas cookies are worth it to me! : )
Some how I lucked out this year and only put on 1 1/2 this month....And I'm getting my tonsils out on Friday (boo), so maybe that will keep some of the holiday weight gain in check this year seeing as I won't be able to eat much.....

Anyway-you can totally do it, and I'm sure you'll do it quickly! You're always up for a challenge!

At 5'3", 7 pounds would SO show on me - it would put me up a whole size! I just make it a point to weigh myself daily and also work off my consumed calories ASAP or prior to eating them. ;)

At least you are paying attention! I shouldn't say this, but I lost a pound this week (pre-race). I know. Makes no sense to me either.

Rookie on the Run said...

I haven't gotten on the scale, but I don't feel like I've gained.

I knowyou will lose it!! Good for you for making plans and coming up with a weight-loss strategy!

Jesse said...

I managed to escape the holiday weight gain for the most part. But, now that I'm pseudo-vegan, I didn't have the opportunity to eat what I used to.

Lisa said...

i have been afraid to step on the scale. my eating and exercise have both been big FAILs. You can get back on track - I'm sure of it!

Nerual said...

Lets just say I ran a half marathon, and right after I got home I stepped on the scale and was still up 3 lbs. I will be detoxing all this week.

Megan said...

yeah, i gotta stop reward myself for completing my long runs with sonic burger combos.

You're tall so 7lbs is like 4lbs for a normal size girl.

Cheer up. You'll fix it. And it'll all be better.

Janice {Run Far} said...

well I am up about 3 lbs and I didnt even leave town. I only missed one day of normal workouts too... Yikes. No sugar, more water and F/V this is my plan... gotta get it off so I can go into x-mas with a positive vibe.

Marlene said...

Ahhh, I have been there my friend. I had that realization at the end of October when I stepped on the scale to see a significant gain. (Hence kicking off PROJECT LEAN MEAN RUNNING MACHINE). Since then I have lost 11 lbs!!! You know what to do and you can do it too.

Allison Talamantez said...

Oh that dang scale. I can not stand it...not to mention the ridiculous amounts of water weight fluctuation and such. GRRRRRR.

Jaime said...

wow! i can't believe you put your weight out there for all to see. talk about honesty.

*sigh* after seeing your weight and normal weight and how my 5'5" frame is getting awfully close to your normal weight, i'd say it's time for me to crack down. i'm pretty sure running would be much more enjoyable without carrying around all that excess weight. uuuuuggghhhhh.

Denise said...

First of all, I thought it was really cool that you put your weight in that post. It shows how confident you are and I'm envious. Serioulsy.

I splurged WAY too much this past holiday. Hate it.
