I Think I Can I Think I Can

"Whether you believe you can
or believe you can't,
you're probably right."
Henry Ford

I have been an athlete since grade 6 (subtract the few years I took off to pop out babies and eat ice cream.) As an Athlete I am highly competitive, driven and focused. Running is VERY new to me, I find the challenge really exciting. I have yet to truly unleash, leave it all on the course and collapse with an empty tank. This weekend I am going to do that in my Half Marathon. I may end up crawling to finish the last .1...but I would rather that then having an excess of energy that I did not exert.
My goals...have been ever changing. Following the lead of the amazing Marlene and making it my own I have 4 distinct Goals...using the classifications from my Work yearly Evaluation.

Far Exceeded Expectations=

1:39 Pace of 7:33 per mile

I believe that this is possible on a perfect running day. My only hesitation is that I have not been 100% committed to my speed work or my training plan. In order to hit this pace I will have to stay focused and not let Polly Pessimism in at the first sign of fatigue. I will be uncomfortable at this pace, but I know I can do it. Winning the Costume Contest would also Far Exceed my expectations.

Exceeded Expectations=

1:41 Pace of 7:42 per mile

Beating my current Half Marathon PR by over 2 minutes would be AMAZING. I know my legs can run sub 8 minute miles for 13.1 miles. It is my head that needs to be in it to pull this off. I would be SUPER happy with this time.

Met Expectations=

1:43:38 Pace of 7:54 per mile

This would be a 1 second PR. The Capital City Half Marathon, my first and only Half Marathon, was a Rolling Hills course and I had never raced before. I did not know what to expect and was just running to see what I could do. I know I can beat my PR and I expect to beat it by at least 1 second.

Did not Meet Expectations=

1:53 Pace of around 8:33 per mile

8:33 is my comfortable, I could run all day, Pace. If I have a BAD running day (for me) and opt to just Finish and enjoy the race this will be my time. I will still be proud, but my GOAL is to beat my PR not just to Finish.

  • So there you have it. Still have not tested out my Giraffe hat from Tangle Wit Designs. I am NERVOUS to run in a new outfit on Race day, I do not want any wardrobe malfunctions. I have a few options laid out on my dresser, including a plan for UGH Rain.

On the plan today 30 minute Tempo run....I plan to run for 30 minutes as fast as I can...for FUN!! Then 2 days of rest before the BIG DAY!!

Good Luck! My last half marathon I had a goal to break 1:40.(previous PR 1:41:59) I set up my plan to run mile 1 @ 7:45 and all the rest at 7:33. I also wrote the splits for mile 5, 7, 9, and 11 on my arm. I wanted to stick pretty close to these times so I wouldn't burn out but I got a huge adrenaline rush when I would be under at the mile markers. I kept doing the math in my head to see how much I had gained. I got an even bigger rush at mile 11 when I knew I would have to break my ankle to not reach my goal. I finished in 1:37:32. I bet if you have a plan and stick to it you'll meet your #1 goal!! Hope the conditions are perfect!!

I can't believe you run 7-something-minute miles and running is "new" to you! You are so fast!

With your super long legs, do you have really long strides? I am tall (not as tall as you), but close to 5'9". My general walking pace is really fast, but when I'm running I feel like I'm scrunching my legs up and not taking advantage of how long that are.

Good luck to you this weekend!

OMG you are flippin' FAST! I don't doubt that you will meet your goals. Good luck.

I love your goal format... might have to borrow it next time. :)

I have a good feeling.

Hubby likes to remind me before a race "It's not supposed to feel good." Haha. I like to describe a good half marathon as comfortably hard for the first half and uncomfortably hard for the second half.

Go get it, my tall running friend. :)

My new mantra. Say it with me, "On any given day, you just don't know what you are capable of until you try. Today I am going to amaze myself because TODAY I am going to try!"

I know you will amaze yourself. Enjoy the journey.

you're totally going to do it ... and if it makes you feel better your "did not meet expectations" is equal to my "only in my dreams" outcome! Good Luck!

GREAT plans. you can do it!!!!!!!!! remember, it's going to be hard. especially to get those exceeding goals. so you have to tell yourself to hang on. and work on your breathing!!!!!!!! as long as you are breathing you are okay :)

You're the bomb!! That is an AWESOME time!! I know you can do it! You're the tall girl that was blessed with SPEED. I'm jealous! :)

I can't believe 8:33 is a comfortable "run all day" pace for you! That would be me at top speed! Of course, I am an entire foot shorter than you, so my tiny Smurf legs must be a distinct disadvantage.

You got this!

Wow, I wonder what 8:33 happy pace would feel like =).

Ok I think you are going to do wonderful..but I don't think you should have a pace called did not meet expectations...isn't that like telling your son that even if he finishes the race it's not good enough, you wouldn't EVER teach him that lesson, so why do that to yourself
